On my MK1 Focus i am getting a randow knocking noise at the front left wheel area, it comes and goes and sometimes over bumps and sometimes not, i have looked at everything under car checked all over tightened various things to no avail...

Put the car up on axel stands and started car and went up the gears but noise wasnt there, without having to start changing bushing after bushing and part after part is there a handy wat to diagnose these suspension noises? (I have recently replaced the drop links on both side) I was thinking the anti roll bar bushing maybe but the handling/steering is fine adn the bar is pretty hard to get to.

You're unlikely to find the problem usuing axlestands, drive it onto ramps or a pit, use a prybar or some type of lever to search for play in ball joints or bushings.

I was doing this as best i could with the front of the car up on stands and still couldn't find it, maybe i need it up on a ramp to get at it right

I dont know about fords, but if that was a french car it would be the front drop links, cheap and easy to do.

If its a rattley noise its normally drop links, or can be anti roll bar bushings at the back
A thumping as you go round a bend is normally wheel bearing (check that there isnt too much play in the wheel when off the ground)

These are massive generalisations and I dont know the set up on a focus, but it might point you in the right direction!

Why not take it to a garage with a lift and get them to lift it and see whats worn?
It would have to be cheaper than randomly replacing components that may not be worn and which may not solve your problem.

Could be a busted shock. Sounds very similar to mine at the minute, and I already know my shocks busted, getting it sorted tomorrow evening.
