Sending tobacco in the post:

Is sending tobacco in the post risky?

A friend of mine is living in mainland Europe, and I want to post him over some tobacco and Irish sweets and crisps not available in mainland (johhny blue).
The problem I have is that An Post want you to declare everything in the parcel. If I don't declare the tobacco me or my friend might get in trouble, but if I do, the post man might nick it

Sorry if this is a trivial thread mods, feeel free to delete if you feel necessary. I am not advocating anything illegal either or seeking legal advice, I just need to know if I'm legally allowed to post tobacco in the first place and whether its risky sending it by post.

    Cheers

Never knew An Post don't allow tobacco, its fine with royal mail as long as you stick to customs requirements.

He's Irish, you can get jp special there, the black ones, but he's keen on the blue and benson and hedges.

What are the legal implications if I do send it in the regular post? Just pop it in an envelope and pop it in the post box .... I don't wnt to break the law in any way,but I want him to have his jp blue and benson.

You would need to look up the customs regulations for his country. You are doing nothing illegal as far as I know (although An Post could refuse to send the package).

There are far cheaper alternatives to an Post for sending parcels to the Continent, may or may not have restrictions on tobacco

It's hit and miss. A single small packet of tobacco probably no problem. More they tend to confiscate it.
