Just a quick question. I was out walking now and came across several hazel trees with fresh catkins. I thought these would normally be in springtime so is it unusual to see them in September?

It would be really strange for catkins to be out now, but you may have seen the buds forming for next Feb.

Nope definitely catkins. Was really surprised, and today I saw flowers on an apple tree, strange days..

There seems to be something odd going on with the trees this year. Where we are (southwest) lots of the birches have already lost their leaves; a few people said to me it was down to the very wet summer.
