Exclamation warning light - unexplained problem

Hey, well I was driving my ford focus this morning and doing about 60mph when suddenly the car felt like it stalled, it slowed way down to 40mph and wouldnt go any faster, the red exclamation mark warning light came on. I immediatly checked the handbrake - which was off - of course - I had been driving for miles already and I am an experienced driver lol
The slowness remained untill I pulled over - thought it may be an issue with the computer so like all IT problems I turned the car off then on again lol and the light was gone, and it didnt reappear - the handbrake was off, and I didnt touch it while I stopped to turn the car off & on...anyone any ideas, is this just a malfunction or could there be a serios problem with the brakes?
    Thanks

    Engine management warning?
Check your handbook (or google) for dashlights and thier meanings.

What year is your Focus and which engine is in it?

    Thanks for the responses,

It is a 05 van derived from a car 1.8l engine.
this problem is not the brakes.
The engine management light looks to me like a tap, its orange - it is on at the moment, it has been going on an off for a while..thought it may have been a loose connection as the van just passed mot, nothing wrong....
That is why I am reluctant to go to a garage... But the problem isnt going away so Im off to the garage next week to find out..

The car slows down when doing 55 - 60mph..this only happens about that speed, and only when going up a hill, and it continues going slow (about 40mph) until I stop the car, turn engine off then on again! It never cuts out, and it never happens on a flat road regardless of speed
It has been suggested that it may be air flow meter, it feels like something blocks flow in the engine...suddenly, when you are giving it too much diesel or it is working too hard. Will let yous know what mechanic says.. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like its going into limp mode. Without having a diagnostic scan done any attempt to fix the problem will just be guesswork so the first step is to get a scan done and take it from there.
