Hi i'm just wondering are many people bothering to go to this? I know it says that its compulsory that we go but to be honest it doesn't seem that important?Does any one know what actually happens there?

You get your timetable and meet the tutors, depts and orientate yourself before Monday etc . Why wouldn't you go?

There are certain aspects of the whole day that might not seem to important to certain people; I, for example, thought the student mentor bollocks was bollocks — never talked to him again afterwards. The course briefing is rather necessary though, things that you probably need to know will be shared at that and you will also receive your timetable and other necessary stuff like that.

If you're in Galway then you should definitely make the effort to go, sure what else would you be up to?

Do you need to bring a pen and paper or anything?

Not as far as I can remember, they usually hand out lots of literature with all of the useful information you'd want on it, I can recall being prepared to take down loads of shit but then not having to do so. Just keep your ear peeled for things you need to know.

For engineering it wasn't needed. The mentors didn't know where most things are anyway. Might be more important this year but last year it wasn't

You will find that everything is "compulsory" in university. Lectures, tutorials, etc.
The things you hear at orientation will already have probably been sent out to in in some form. You will also hear them on numerous occasions in the weeks following orientation. It never ceases to amaze how many times it takes someone to hear something before they actually grasp the content of what they are told.

I think you'll find the mentors did know where most things are. You just weren't paying attention or you were the unlucky few who got paired with a Mentor Leader who was a Science Student and not Engineering. And it was needed, you wouldn't be able to find your head from your hole if it wasn't for the mentor. Sit down, shut up and leave my mentors alone.

FIRST YEAR ARTS STUDENTS!!!!! I have a question :) We have three weeks to pick our subjects yes? Until then we have Introductory lectures or is that just this week? Will what is being discussed in these introductory lectures be important come exam time? When does the serious work begin and stuff start going up on blackboard? I missed today, stayed in Dublin last night after the match, I'm a little paranoid :)
