Just had a few tyres changed on an 03 Bora and have been told that the rear axle is fecked. Anyone got any idea how much this costs to get sorted? The guy in the tyre shop just looked at me with great sympathy when I asked.

    cheers.

The axle or the axle bushes? The only way the axle itself can be "fecked" in a Bora is if it is bent or otherwise physically damaged.

I'd say you would pick up a secondhand axle in a scrapyard for €80-100, less if you are good at haggling.

It is probably a good idea to fit new bushes to it before fitting unless you are lucky and the secondhand axle comes with fresh bushes. Genuine Skoda Fabia RS bushes are the best replacements to go for. They are stronger than the originals and are the same price at €45 ex VAT for the pair.

Depending on the condition of your rear brake discs and pads it may also make sense to fit new ones when swapping the bits over to the replacement axle. Allow around €50 + VAT extra for these parts if needed.

Labour time for removing old axle, swapping parts over to replacement axle, fitting new bushes to replacement axle, fitting replacement axle, bleeding brakes etc would be around 4 hours so on average €200 ex VAT in an independent garage.

Allow a few quid extra for brake fluid, maybe a few new nuts, bolts, clips etc. Say €20.

Add all that lot up and you are looking at €450 approx.
