Slow moving vehicles changing lanes

What's the problem with idiots driving up the a*se of vehicles, only then figuring out that's way too slow for them, and then drive out into the right hand lane into faster traffic at the same speed they were travelling at !

Seriously, this happened to me yet again yesterday. Some moron in a blue passat or audi drives up to within a meter of a van then decides he needs to overtake and enters the right lane at a sedate 80kph or so per hour. This is right in front of me, with me traveling at 120kph, forcing me to break suddenly.

When i flashed him to make him aware of the great big vehicle with headlights on bearing in behind him he had the gall to then break and also to make some gesture with his hands when i passed him.

    Don't people
    1) Check whether there's traffic coming from the rear before they change lanes?
    2) Check whether that traffic is moving faster or slower than they are?

The RSA's website seems pretty clear on this:

"If you have good reason to change lanes, use your mirrors and check in plenty of time to ensure that the way is clear. To check your blind spot when travelling at speed, take a quick sideways glance to check the position of a vehicle that may have disappeared from your view in the mirror.

Signal your intention and change lane when it is clear and safe to do so."

This has happened about half a dozen times over the past month, with one time being an 18-wheeler which almost wiped us out.

It's seriously time for a dash cam i think.

Mirror, signal manoeuvre does not exist in the heads of most Irish drivers sadly.

Had the same situation happen to me yesterday, just pulled into the overtaking lane to pass a van and the car infront of him, when I'm about a meter away from passing him he indicates and starts pulling into my lane very nearly hitting my car. Seemed like he knew I was there too, as he was slowly doing it, like trying to force me into the barrier or to slow down so he could overtake that 5 seconds sooner then it would have took if I had just gone past.

I pretty much expect this behavour now, if someone has their indicator on expect that they'll do what ever their indicating for reguardless of what's in there way - indication is right of way sure ...

I think its a simple fact - There are terrible drivers out there. We all encounter them on a daily basis.

    No real other reason.

    100% agree with that.

    1) Very rarely
    2) Almost never

....based on my experience, anyway. And it's usually done without indicators, too.

I find it rare that people use their indicators on motorways at all these days

The exception being the asshole about to merge (plenty of slip road left) who indicates, assumes that gives him right of way, and just ploughs out into lane 1 nearly taking the car already in lane 1 out if it. Quite often this is done by crossing a continuous white line also

    Saw this the other day.

Artic comes up behind slow driver in the left lane of a two-lane carriageway, moves out to overtake.

Slow driver suddenly wakes up and realises what speed he's at and/or that he's going to be overtaken by a lorry. And he speeds up.

Artic now stuck in overtaking lane: can't finish overtake, doesn't drop back (could've, I suppose, but a few faster drivers were now up his arsinio), car matching his speed to the left. Rolling roadblock.

Slow driver doesn't slow down to let artic finish manouevre, though could have done this more easily than the artic in terms of the space behind him. Doesn't seem to be aware of the situation at all, or was one of those "I won't let a lurry get the better of me" types.

This continues for a couple of minutes until the car driver slows down minutely (probably fell asleep again), finally allowing the artic to complete the overtake painfully slowly.

Manoeuvre, break, look in rear mirror, indicate, break, pull back in.

I call these the "one second-ers" cos they leave themselves a whole second to move out before the car behind hits them.

My job has me on the road quite a bit, I find it alarming how many people don't actually know how to drive on a motorway. People that sit in the overtaking lane for no apparent reason also drives me mad!!

The best thing you can do while driving,is make the assumption everybody is stupid and will make mistakes, that way you will anticipate stupid manouvres like this,ie changing lane slowly and at the last possible second..

Never assume people know you are even there,or even what you are going to do next,as you will invariably (if lucky) just dissapointed,or if unlucky get in a crash..

Happened to me once when a guy was pulling out underneath me,i was on a main road,i assumed he saw me(which he didnt, mustve had the brain in neutral or autopilot,as can happen when you are driving on the road and tired etc),anyway he pulled out and i stopped just short of an inch at the last few seconds,it was scary..i thought i was for it and so would he have been given the speed factor..

Youre best course of action is to slow up to situations and hazards or give them plenty of room and stay out of their way..You dont want to get involved in a pile up or a serious crash..
