Steam not installing

Appreciate any help I could get on this. Basically I'm trying to install TF2 on my laptop but after I install Steam from the steaminstall.msi file I keep getting a "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam you must first connect to the internet" error.

I have trawled the interwebs for a solution and others have got similar errors but they all seem to have actually got Steam to at least open before getting that error. My error pops up as Steam tries to update itself straight after 'installing' and I haven't once got to see the main steam menu.

I have made an exception for Steam in my Avast and Windows firewalls so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue, and obviously I am connected to the net.
I'm on the college network at the moment (NUIG) but again I'm fairly sure that's not the issue as I've played games online here before and other Steam-like software has run without a problem.

I've tried deleting the blob file and other folders within the steam folder as a few have suggested elsewhere and I've also tried creating a shortcut and adding the target -tcp as suggested on the steam troubleshooting page but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? It's getting to the stage where I have to figure this out just out of stubborness!

Uninstalling Steam should help , use CC cleaner to get rid off any traces .

Disable your network adapter and restart your router .

    Voila

Thanks for the reply but no dice. Still getting the same messages. I've tried reinstalling Steam to different partitions of my laptop and nothing like that has worked. I'll try my home network soon anyway and at least then I can be sure it's either an issue at my end or the college network.

I probably sound like an awful smartarse, but it sounds (from the error message) that it's your connection, not your installation.

Many university networks and proxies block required ports for Steam operation - please consult your network administrator to ensure the required ports are open if you are using a university network or a proxy. Ports required for Steam can not be re-mapped to HTTP or reconfigured to a custom port range.

Does your firewall / anti-virus / internet security have an "allow everything" setting; just for the purporses of trying this out for a min?

Get rid off avast anti virus. Microsoft Security essentials is just as good, in my opinion.

Yeah, it's the college network blocking it, it works at home. I suspected it might be too but I've never had a problem with it before and I got impatient (the main reason). Shíte anyway. Thanks for the replies.

You COULD bring forward a case for the network admin to open up its access.

    1) Steam is a lot more than just a gaming platform. Mod tools and other features make it a distinct advantage in learning the ins and outs of game programming, rendering features etc.

    2) It's not illegal.

I done so at AIT years ago and they opened it up after a week for us.

Get the approval of a lecturer, that'll seal the deal :P
