Must motorists who have picked up penalty points for speeding or seatbelt infringements or mobile phone usage whilst driving declare these points to their insurance company ?

Your betting off declaring them tbh. Won't make a difference unless it's a good few points. e.g 4 pts usually wouldn't make any difference to a calculated premium.

Check your T&C but probably you have to.

Of course you have to disclose them. They may not necessarily affect the premium however.

The first 2 or 4 points are not going to make much of a difference, if any, to your premium.

But not declaring them, and then being found out when\if you need to make a claim will cost you a lot more as the insurance company will either not pay out or reduce the pay out as you didnt tell them about a materical fact.

+1 to this. They could declare the contract void, return your premium, and you'd be also done for driving without insurance as well, as you didn't have a valid policy in place.

Now the interesting part is, the declaration of you, as a driver, needs to be made at time of policy inception. However, if the car is modified it needs to be declared. However, I would strongly recommend you tell them about any points. A previous insurer of mine once told me its anything about 6 points as "most people have 4 points at this stage"!

Maybe some insurance companies want to be told and some don't ??
There is no legal requirement to inform them is there. Can anyone throw any light on the numbers who have 6 points at this stage ? If the Insurers put their heads together on this, they could use it to ramp up premiums ?
