Planet X or Turas bikes

Just wondering if anyone here is riding Planet X or Turas bikes. I am debating between the N2A or a custom built Turas with SRAM force.

Would love to here opinions from owners or even non owners.

Never heard of Turas bikes before now. On their website it says hand built in Ireland, does this just mean they buy in Chinese frames and assemble them (which I could do myself) or is there a plant making carbon frames somewhere in Ireland? If they are genuinely built and not just assembled here, I want one.

They're designed and assembled in ireland. The frame is not a bog standard design but asymmetrical in design (chain stays are different design on each side)
Check out their facebook page (www.turasbikes.com) for some images.

Do they have a physical address and not just a Facebook page?

I was wondering the same thing about where the frame is actually built but couldn't find that detail anywhere.

Also having recently bought a new frame I was disappointed with the website and details available on there frames as I couldn't find much online about them so moved onto different manufactures. I know there an upcoming company but I'd recommend some more info online for them.

I was talking to the guys in tribikes who are developing them. I think they are only getting going with the site etc. quality looks good with beefy head tube and bb. Frame feels fairly stiff and not too heavy.

The other 2 I am thinking about are cube and focus but I am not sure which way to go.

Turas bikes are lovely. Saw one built up in TriBikes in Limerick with Di2 and they look the part.

I'm riding a Turas RR1.0 for almost a year now and love it. No major issues and any minor issues (cable tightening, tune-ups) have been looked after by the staff in tribikes Limerick. Brilliant after sale service.

But don't take my word for it. I'm in good company ... Nico's even been taking one for a spin.

    Nice, seen that alright.

Going for a test ride at the weekend on a RR2.0 hopefully. I have dropped the idea of planet X or cube/focus as I think while they are maybe cheaper I will be wishing I held out.

The other that has just caught my eye is a Scott foil, but they would stretch my budget a bit more.

Is there any photos of other riders/bikes on Turas.

I really doubt that there would be much from them considering they're a relatively new brand.

Has anyone found out where the frame is made?

According to a post on their Facebook page it's made in the Far East .

Out of interest I checked their website. Have to say they give very little info about their products. The RR1.0 looks good though plus you can have custom paint job for extra 200€.

So for 1300€ it looks like a good deal. A while ago I was looking at izalco pro frameset from focus and the price tag on that was 1750€ or £ cant remember now.

Now my question would be - how good are frames from Turas ? With so little info, no reviews, even no decent photos it would be a big gamble for me if I was to spend this much money. And by spending this amount I would keep that frame for at least 5 years.

I'm reasonably sure the bikes the NR Dev squad are riding are FM039 ISP frames from hongfu or someone else using the same mould.

If that's true you're paying a serious premium for the tarus paint job

And I wouldn't be suprised you could get the exact same Turas paint job done by the same company

You're paying for someone else to go through all the hassle of importing goods from a foreign country, you're paying for them to rent a warehouse to hold stock in so you don't have to wait 6-8 weeks from placing the order to receiving the goods, you're paying for the benefit of having someone local to bring your bike back to and have it sorted if you have any problems with it, etc. etc.

I'm not saying the above is worth the difference between ordering direct from the supplier, but you're not just paying for a paint job...

If the NRPT are happy to use them i am sure they are good, also talking to Dylan and couple the others they seem to be very happy with them.

IF it was me, I'd keep my circa €1400 difference and order it directly, cheers.

Funny you say that, when a Turas 1.0 RR frameset is listed at €1100....

I remember seeing the frameset on the old website for about €2000, or else I'm going mad.

    Still, I'll keep my €400ish.

If you flick through some of the images on heir Facebook page somebody asked if it was a hong fu and the founder replied (mark, I think) saying it wasn't and was made differently.
Don't know for sure though. Wonder is warranty any better than buying from china.

Its probably not if you get custom paint job.

The bikes may not be made in Ireland, but what does that matter, none are , and I would guess that most big euro brands are also coming from China , Far East etc.
Unless you are in the market for a Turas, and need the information, most comments here are knocking a new Irish company.
I would guess that the warranty, service etc are all better than trying to buy direct.
They are pretty clear of their product on their website http://turasbikes.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=4

Agreed. Spoke to last year when I was looking and they were very helpful. Looked at the bikes and they seemed to be very well finished. Good to see an Irish company having a go at something. They are also linked with the composites group in UL so would be nice to see them get traction.
Really need to market the hell out of it though.

Looked at turas framesets at bike expo thingy couple of months back and liked the frames, finish seemed pretty good- seemed better finish than time frames .

I can see both sides , is it worth paying a bit more for what might be a hong fu ,deng fu etc frame? While I looked at Chinese option and might do it in future I'd prob pay bit extra if it meant having a semi local fella to annoy the living daylights out of over any issues :) you can spend fortune on a DeRosa which prob never even sees Italy so buying an Irish bike where frame is made abroad doesn't bother me.

Only prob I had with Turas was delay in getting back to email after show but saying that they were very busy and sales guy I dealt with wasn't trying to push more expensive frame and actually ended up recommending the cheaper option.

At time I got quote of 150 euro for a custom paint job and they said guy they used was limerick based.

Btw whole frame decision thing is on hold after damaging a disc in back at work

They have membership, I believe anyone can get membership. It doesn't mean they are developing advanced composites with UL. It's a badge of honour, I'm sure they donate a frame or two to a postgrad researcher to carry out some materials project for a thesis, but I don't think it is for developing high end composites.

Yes, they are having a go. But what market are they aimed at? Planet-x started out building their brand by going for the "high volume, low margin" approach on the SL Pro Carbon, offering a great package that couldn't be beaten on price. Turas don't seem to have any model other than "we're Irish". It's the kind of crap I would expect from the Gathering, they need to be a bit more imaginative if they want people to spend money with them. You can get a better deal from Canyon, an established internet brand, so where is the niche???

I'd be the first person to support an Irish brand (go woodello!) but I don't care for being ripped off. Cost of storing, building, painting, etc. aside, the bikes should still be more competitively priced given economies of scale.

Maybe they should target the gullible Irish-American market instead?
