Part-time Dole

    Hi,

Apologies if this is asked already. I'm having a hard time finding definite answers on this from searching.

I'm currently on full jobseekers allowance and thankfully I might have some part-time work in the near future. It'll be about 16 hours over 2 days.

I'm aware that part-time JA is calculated as 5 working days minus the 2 I'll be working. So just to do some quick sums on that:

    I currently receive €188. 3/5 of that is €112.80.

Do I receive this with amount without affecting the salary from my part-time job. As in, if I received €100 for the 2 days of work, in total I would receive €212.80, combined, from the two different sources?

On one hand, I can see the government wanting to cap the payouts and say you still can't receive over €188, in total. On the other hand, this offers little incentive to find work for some and the lure of more money every week is great encouragement. Plus the government still saves money from the normal rate - so it would make sense to not cap it drastically.

Finally, I believe I would receive a cheque, weekly, and could stop having to queue in a post-office. Is this correct?

    Thanks in advance.

I was told by one of the welfare officers that if I did get some work part time and it was on a Sunday then it would not effect my welfare claim.

Not sure what days you'll be working but if it's Monday to Sat then it will effect you claim in some way you'll have to go to the welfare office and get a form where you fill in hours worked then hand it in each week.

I don't think they do cheques anymore it'll be paid directly into your bank account

I was aware of the Sunday rule, leeomurchu, but I'm more interested in my question on whether the combined money is capped at 188. Appreciate the reply all the same.

(on a side-note, I believe that the Sunday rule has actually recently been changed and is no longer exempt from being counted).

RE: the Sunday rule, not yet but it will be.

Basically they won't cap you at 188, but they will assess your means and calculate a daily rate to take off you for every day you work, and then subtract that from the 188.

And it is definitely cheque you get paid by.

It's not definitely cheque that's for sure perhaps they do both but I was paid directly into my account.

So you're asking if you'll still get your €188 dole a week even though you're workin??

Surely you can figure that out. If you're working you're not goin to get full benefits. Why do you think so many people on the welfare are choosing not to work as they're better off on the welfare.

100% it's cheque for casual claims. They possibly had you on a bank payment because your days didn't change, or you were on a different scheme.

I don't think the OP is wondering if he'll get the full 188, I think he's just worried that the max he will come out with after working and claiming is 188. Definitely not the case.

I was on the €188 per week and then I got some casual work random days.

I filled in hours worked and which days and dropped it into their post box and my money was lodged to my account. I don't know what way it works but that's how it worked for me

If you're workin say 3 days per week while qualifying for €188 a week welfare then you'll take a hit on your welfare claim.

If you're gettin say €200/week working you might lose €50(+/-) of your welfare. Leaving you with €328/week so you'll be up compared to your welfare claim.

The figures I've used there are made up for example as it will change depending on circumstances and days that you work.

You will probably be means tested and might end up losing all of your claim medical cards etc.

Fair enough, someone in the office must have taken a shine to you!

With regards to the means test, if you were getting 100€ a day for 2 days, they'll take a lot more than 50 off you, more like 50 per day minused from the 188, but provided you aren't working too many hours you won't miss out on a medical card. I know people working full time, earning more than I do getting one, because it's all dependant on circumstances.

Haha I wish they did because I get sweet fa off them these days not even the offer of one of these illustrious courses they're always banging on about.

You might be bumped to a GP card if you work to many hours but you'll figure it out. Try work as many Sundays as possible at least till they do away with that rule. :D
