Well lads, did any of ye ever send away yer dog to b trained, was it sucessfull, how long did it take and how much. I was goin ok but still having trouble gettin him to return on the recall even witout a dummy, & now he wont stay close, want to tear off & hunt.hes only 7mts(i tought he was 8mts). I think hes a headstrong lad. Loosing faith in meself now to train him as its like all is going wrong. Im using books and dvds & i cant get sucess. Up at 6.45 every morning for 15mins training and 15min in evening and the above is me result. Sickened

Lad relax pull in back a bit and just work on the basics , what happens is ya go to far and forget to In force the basics like walk to heel and dropping to the whistle . Do it for two weeks and then go to the Feild for quartering again . Do heel work and dropping to whistle 2 days a week . Rome wasn't build in a day and your dog could be two before everything falls into place

I agree, keep at it. I dunno if 15 mins is enough though. When he returns give him plenty of praise, I had problems with my springer, but I took him out for an hour every evening without fail. Every day, rain or shine. The only fault I have now is when he gets on a bird he tends to go too quick.but when he is hunting he always stays within 20-30yrds. Just keep takin him out! You will only get out what you put into him.

You can do this yourself bud.

Basic training Manners first when he does something good praise the nuts off him so he things he is brilliant he won't be long coming around.

Also try remain as calm as you can because he will sense everything from you.

What do i do then for the other five days? up until last mont i was letting him out of kennel say at 6.45. id clean the run while he was running around the yard/garden, picking up things and smelling things. then when he was 6mts i startrd to put lead on him from kennel to the back field where i was training for sit and stay, for 15-20mins(in rain or shine) then back to kennel on lead. no free time only quatering in the field. the training session consisted of : out to field, SIT, throw dummy and he would retrieve but hesitant then SIT STAY for say a minute. Then quarter him for few minutes and call him back up to me,SIT STAY things were good back to kennel.over the month he has got a liking for cover and now the whistle means noting, ive went out at him when he dosent respond and caught him by the ear and to be honest i think this makes him worse, he goes wild after i chastise him. now i dont no what to do,im woundering does he need harder punishment but i DONT want to do that to him whatsoever kills me to even give him a tug. the whole yoke is in a hape :( if he wont stay tight now, he will be a demon on game i know well.

He probably gets half hr to 45mins in evening and i have him out everyday rain or shine all you have to do is look at the womens face when alarm is going off in morning and in evening when she wants somthing done and im off out with the dog:D
it seems to me that hes after getting confident and that means he dosent need me. hes very hyper dog.

I'd stick at it myself, might do to make the basic sessions a bit longer at this stage. The dog could be getting bored, try a few hidden retrieves in the field sessions, my Springers loved this just makes it more challenging for them. 7mths old is a difficult time with a dog, he's just at that age where he'll be bold and try to assert himself... keep at him, don't loose faith you've got him this far.

There is lots of little things to do , but you don't have to be at something with him everyday , that could be most of you problem he bored with the same stuff everyday , he only still a pup people forget that . Mix it up for him.

If ya want to pm me ur number il buzz ya tonight and chat with u

Doesnt matter who, or how much you spend on a dog IMO
it wont be what you want unless you do the training

I got in contact with the man i bought the dog from, he professional trainer and he invited me to bring the dog to acess him yesterday. The check cord is the answer and he had the dog turning after 10mins, mind you, id b turning too if i was turned upside down 3 times. I used it this morning for 5mins and dog is coming back with the retrieve. Hes not as wild now because he knows its on him so hopefully it will go well. Few lads told me that if you have a hunting dog then chances are he will need check cord. il be bald again im finished with this lad.

Fair play to the breeder for helping u out, and to you for hanging in there, it'll be worth when he's trained. Nothing like having a dog you trained yourself working well for you flushing and retrieving... (except maybe catching a wild trout on a dry fly you tied yourself);)
