Battered Mars bar .... Mars doesn't endorse it

Seems it doesn't fit the Mars "healthy Lifestyle"
Chocolate manufacturing giant Mars has distanced itself from the famous deep-fried Mars bar by seeking a disclaimer.

The Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, in Aberdeenshire, claims to be the birthplace of the recipe almost two decades ago.

Plans to bid for EU protected geographical status were dropped.

Mars has written to the owners saying the product is not authorised or endorsed as it does not fit the company's promotion of healthy living.

A menu disclaimer is being sought.

A Mars spokesperson said: "We are really flattered that customers of Carron Fish Bar like our product so much that it has now become a flagship product for the store.

"No application for a protected geographical indication has been filed to date.

"Should an application be filed, unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to support it as deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles."
    'Craziest takeaway'

Lorraine Watson from the Carron Fish Bar told BBC Scotland they had written to Mars to say they were happy to put up a "disclaimer" notice in the shop.

The deep-fried Mars bar has become synonymous with negative aspects of the Scottish diet since it was first reported in the Daily Record in 1995.

The newspaper called the phenomenon, with its links to Stonehaven, "Scotland's craziest takeaway" and said "sweet-toothed youngsters are ordering their favourite choc bars deep-fried in batter".

By 2004, the reputation of the deep-fried Mars bar had travelled the Atlantic and it was mentioned on the Jay Leno Show in the US.

Later that year, UK medical magazine The Lancet published research from two Glasgow-based public health experts who thought the craze could be an urban myth as they had never met anyone who had eaten one.

They surveyed hundreds of fish and chip shops in Scotland to find out if "the delicacy" was available and if people were actually buying them.

It found 66 shops which sold them, 22% of those who had answered the survey.

They're delicious. Just be wary of the lava inside that is hot caramel. You wont have much skin left on your chin if it gets you.

A few places around Dublin do them.

I've wanted to try one for ages – haven't managed to yet though. I think they'd be savage. Went into a chipper in Dublin that supposedly does them, "Battered Mars Bar" on the menu board and everything, and when we asked for some he said they were out :(

Coulda popped to the corner shop and returned with one, I suppose.

Try a deep-fried battered mini pizza first!

I've had the battered mars bar sober, it's really nice, a bit like a hot profiterole.

Lol@mars, it can't be much worse than having two mars bars.

Will have to try one next time I'm in town.

The Sea Shell near Westland Row at the back of TCD used to do them... infact they would batter almost anything you brought them.
    Battered CurlyWurly was nice.
Closed down now, I assume for health violations.

    [*]Battered Black Pudding
That sounds damned nice. I'd try these things at home but I don't have a deep fat fryer.

I think the kettle of fish in Galway do these too.

Battered Mars Bars are over-rated. A battered Milky Way is much much nicer.
Easy to do yourself too and you can nearly batter anything.
Nicest I had was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich battered.

Well I went for the healthy cheese and tomato version. Was ok. I assume a pepperoni one would be nicer!

Just a word of warning - make sure there's a defibrillator nearby if trying some of these delicacies. (I think they sound great by the way).

I have to say I like deep fried Mars Bars. But the best I ever had was deep fried cheesecake in Canada! It was amazing - they wrapped it in a tortilla and then deep fried it! Twas lovely!

the one thing that annoys me of heading to cork or limerick from Mayo is the bypass of Gort ... Kittle of fish sell them and i used to stop there religiously!

they have a place in galway City too that sell them, yum!!

but speaking of bypasses, its a one way ticket to get one!

Is this fact?? Not the fact that they are whopper, because that's a given, but that they're available in Clontarf. Everywhere 'used' to do them or 'probably' does them! Is it a definate?

Chipper in Inchicore village does them, on the right as you go towards town, could be a Macari's.

In Dundrum there's a chipper on the right after the Luas bridge going into town as well, beside a Domino's, they do them as well.

Don't knock it til you've tried it! It was really good - the tortilla went all crispy and the filling from the cheesecake was all melty and gooey! A bit of ice cream on the side finished it off nicely!

So what do they do exactly ?

Wrap the cheesecake in tortilla and deep fry that, or wrap it in a tortilla, dip it in batter and deepfry that?

Either way sounds class to me. Just wondering .

I went on a quest to find a place that did them while I had tourist friends in town, and it's surprisingly difficult. Everyone will tell you of somewhere they "heard" did them, and doesn't, or doesn't anymore. People will keep sending you in the vague direction of Trinity, but if there's still somewhere that does them there now, we couldn't find it.

In the end, I think we got a chipper on Capel Street to do it, but I don't know if that place is still open now either.

If anybody knows somewhere in City Centre Dublin that still does deep fried Mars bars, let me know. It shaves about five years off your life, but it's totally worth it, not nearly as stodgy as you'd think. Delicious.

Absolutely spot on - used to live down from there approx 10 years ago.
Asked the owner (was it Sean?) if he did battered mars bars - his reply was "You can bring anything in and we'll batter it for ya!"
Sad to hear its now closed down!

Best pub in Dublin, that's where I got them.

The waitress can recommend a suitable beer to accompany their fine selection of deep fried delights.

It would be kind of funny if the deep fried mars bar has become a fancy sit down dessert in gastropubs.

do you have to buy your own mars or do they have em there? where in City Centre do ya get one? isn't there one around near ringsend area?
