Wedding cake delivery

    Hey guys

I was in the rds on Sunday with my fiancé and was enquiring about wedding cakes, we tried samples and know the fillings we want. We were willing to book and pay a deposit there and then if we got a good deal bit we couldn't believe the amour of people that said they don't deliver! I know I certainly wouldn't trust myself to drive te wedding cake to the hotel and set it up, I have no problem paying reasonable delivery expenses but when your paying around €400 for a cake you'd assume there would be some delivery service available. Am I alone in thinking this?

    Thanks

You'd imagine they'd deliver it to the hotel for you alright and let the hotel set it up.

€400 probably isn't the highest price for a wedding cake so they probably only offer a set up service on the higher end of things. it'd depend on location aswell I suppose. Dublin baker Cork wedding somethin along those lines travel would be pricey.

My wife made ours so it was cheap and looked cool (biased I know)

Anyway delivery isn't to bad unless you're getting some massive creation just get one of the groomsmen to pick up and drop off the night before and all will be right.

I know it's not a massive amount to pay for a cake but I'd assume it's those kind of orders that keep them going. The hotel is in Carlow and they were Dublin based companies. I could pick the cake up myself but I wouldn't take responsibility nor would I expect my groomsmen to take responsibility for it. I just can't understand why they wouldn't deliver

€400 is not cheap. Ours was cheaper than that and she delivered. I think the problem might be that you want it delivered to Carlow. It's probably too far for them to go. Could you find someone closer?

I could and probably will get a local supplier, but I'm just surprised they wouldn't deliver when I was willing to pay expenses

    Who said €400 was cheap??

It's a fair bit to pay for a cake and sure if they don't deliver there's plenty of places that will. Try one of them out.

If you bring along a pic of the cake you'll probably find someone who'll make it and deliver in carlow. I'd say it was having to spend €30+ on diesel for delivery.

Good Luck, hope you get sorted. :)

You cant really expect them to deliver it that distance. They probably make a dozen cakes on a busy day and they all need to be delivered in a very short time, they would need a few different drivers and vans to go in all different directions.

Most of them do deliver and I assume they are the ones that get the majority of the business. Would most people be willing to collect the cake themselves?

I'd say its nearly 50/50 with companies delivering and B&G's delivering, have yet to see an accident with one. Ideally borrow a jeep or van that has a large load space and really dont worry about it too much. Most cakes come in tiers to be set up at the hotel, so they are individually boxed and normally heavy so they dont move around much.

Drove mine over from London in the back of my car, along with a few of my worldly goods and my cat! :D Got there in one piece, then delivered it to the venue who set it up FOC.

OP - Is there someone with a reasonably large car who could collect the cake and deliver it to the hotel for you. Bung them a few quid for petrol and you're sorted!

You cannot expect them to deliver this far it would make no sense at all. Most hotels will not take delivery until the morning of the wedding.
I know someone who makes wedding cakes and she delivers because she always likes to set it up herself.
There is nothing wrong with picking it up yourself the day before but tbh it would be easier to get someone local to make it.

I'm not a bit surprised that they won't deliver they are in Dublin and your reception is in Carlow. They would need a full time driver to go around the country and then would need two or more drivers/vans if they have more than one wedding that day. €400 is on the low side for wedding cakes why don't you collect it yourself or like them is it to far to travel with a cake that may get damaged

The cake maker I'm sure will provide boxes for the cakes to safely travel in. If it's separate tiers it's easy peasy. If it's a stacked cake then it's harder but I'm sure the hotel have assembled them before.

If you haven't ordered yet (I don't think you have) and you're going to have to deliver it yourself then I would recommend separate cakes that each go on to rungs on a cake stand like the one below. Each base is larger than the cake so any movement in the car will be fine as that space on the board acts as a buffer inside a box. Make sure the cake person ices the cake underneath onto the board for ease of travel. Also ask your venue what cake stands they have.

OP, I got married in Carlow in July and had my cake made and delivered for almost half that amount.

Cake was delicious and there wasn't crumb left of what we had cut for the reception.
