Paypal take a % of the sale so many big places will not use them. Paypal are more suited to small timers, since the small company will not have the resource to run an online payment system. Also buyers tend to trust paypal more (more chance of a refund if stuff goes wrong) so buyers prefer to buy from a small possibly dodgy site who offer paypal.

If a shop like amazon were to offer paypal and get the same profits they they would have to increase prices across the board to cover the money paypal will take.

Chainreactioncycles are a big online store who accept it, I never use it for 3 reasons.
    1. I trust them.
    2. I get a better exchange rate with my bank.
    3. If everybody were to use paypal then in the future I would expect to see increased prices from this shop, who I will be buying from again.

;) Ebay own Paypal which is a direct competitor to Amazon, so I doubt Amazon will be using them anytime soon.
The fees to the seller are a put off for a lot of retailers.
