Timing belt replacement cost

In reply to an old, closed down thread about the cost of routine car servicing,
I just thought I’d set the record straight:

Got the timing belt changed at 60m on my Mazda MX-5 along with a new water pump, the water drained & new anti-freeze + water changed and the oil & filter changed for €490 all in. And the two drive belts replaced while they were at it. All jobs are pretty much recommended to go together when you’re doing a TB change. Sourced the parts myself from an out of town car parts distributor that were hard to catch as they also worked office hrs.

The following spurious parts were fitted:

    • Oil filter €4
    • 5W-30 oil 5L (K2) €24
    • Drive belt for alternator €7
    • Drive belt for power steering €7
    • Timing belt apparatus (Blueprint) €60
    • Water pump €105
    • VAT @ 23% €50
    • Antifreeze conc. 5L (Halfords) €33

    Total parts approx. €290
    Total labour €200
    Net €490

Obviously at 60K the waterpump that was thrown out was perfectly fine given that they usually last for 150,000m or 10 yrs, but as my car is 11 yrs old I chose to play it safe. This added an optional but better safe than sorry €100 to the bill.

That’ll do me for another long long time!

    Hope this educates.
