Probably movies and TV shows that accidentally fell off the internet onto their computer. It's a common hazard.

Archiving is also a hazard. I've been archiving since 1993. Even my old laptop has 1.5TB of hard-drive space (2 * 750Mb). RAM is also important- 8Gb or 16Gb alongside a good processor, is fast becoming the norm (esp. if you're doing a lot of video editing). I've over 2TB of photos alone (I like to save RAW imagery)- most of it backed up onto CDs- that I'd love to have immediate access to- but don't have the space to load onto one of our laptops here.......

In my case I have filled up my hard drive with HD footages of my daughter ;)

It says "plug n play" on the spec. Does this mean you can plug it straight into your TV USB port and it will play movies etc? Or does it just mean you can use it on your desktop/laptop without having to install software?

Just computers. Most stuff for TV needs to be formatted as FAT32 and some TV's won't read larger drives.

You should get 2x drives the same. One as a backup of the other.

You should check the exact model of the TV. Some TV's and Bluray players accept NTFS disks.

Well, 'plug and play' means if you plug it into a PC it'll act like a hard drive, with no setting-up, finding drivers, etc.

Check your TV manual to see whether & how it supports any USB connections. My TV has a USB port but it's only for firmware updates.

I am using crashplan however I am going to move soon to backblaze.com since the first one doesn't send Hardrives with the backup to Europe.

if this is the touro range, I've had nothing but hassle with mine, won't work in usb 3.0 ports at all.

I am trying to use parcel motel for this too. I have the N.I. address as the delivery address but my card is registered to my Dublin address. How did you manage to get around this? It gives me the option to manually input it but its looking for a UK postcode?

Yeah I had to manually enter the UK address, postcode is BT36 4PX:

    Your Name
    Your Parcel Motel number

    Parcel Motel
    1A McKinney Road
    Mallusk
    Newtownabbey
    Co Antrim
    BT36 4PX

I used Paypal to checkout and no problems!

To be honest I didn't try to connect it to a USB 3.0 port

it's not just that, it's prone to detaching itself or responding very slowly to read requests.

    Maybe its faulty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

quite possible, i haven't bothered sending it back

but one of the interesting things i read while trawling for fixes was that hitachi say that this is essentially a backup storage device so they expect you to have another copy of the data stored on it elsewhere :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Thats good advice. Hard Drives fail. You should never have all your data in one place.

I used standard checkout as opposed to paypal. Would have preferred paypal but dont think I can have two addresses registered to the one card. The problem I ran into with the standard credit card checkout was it was looking for the billing address which I assume would be the address registered against th credit card, so I couldnt use the parcel motel one. Managed to manually input most of the address but with the Belfast postal code and United Kingdom as country. It went through with verified by visa and no cancellation email as of yet.

Just another point, my delivery address was as per parcel motels instructions with my user name etc and all details were correct before I hit the order button. Just noticed now on the confirmation email that the address is

    Delivery address :
    parcel motel
    1a mckinney road
    mallusk
    Newtownabbey
    BT36 4PX

with no name or pm hotel personal number. Did anyone else who ordered through parcel motel have this issue?

 Just had a call there from Dabs and they refused to send to parcel motel. Said they will ship to southern Ireland and I could amend my shipping address but I am unable to input an Irish address on their site.

Anyone manage to get around this?

I did create a new account. I was on the phone to them yesterday and they questioned the parcel motel bit. When I explained what it was they said they would not deliver as they do not ship to forwarding companies. However they did they they would ship to my Irish address but I am unable to enter it as I get no option to enter Ireland as country. Have emailed them about this so see what happens but I am not holding my breath. I will just cancel the order and hold out for a different company.

When I was in america the local parcel forwarder gave made up addresses for their ids like apartment 24, princeton mews or 245 princeton avenue etc of course those were the days before google street view showing a giant warehouse. Maybe parcel motel can do something similat instead of pm12345 have apartment 12345
