I applied for the grant as a mature student, Im in my 2nd year(final year) I received the grant last year.
I thought it would be straight forward enough this year but I cannot prove that I am an independent student. I have a lease for two years in my own name ..which is not good enough. My esb is in someone elses name (previous tenant)because I do not have the €250/300 required to change it.

My bank account has my home address on it simply because I use 365 and never bothered to change it
I don't know what to do,I had to move out of home due to a tragedy in the family and my nieces moving in and I did not realise I would need these documents, since a lease is usually acceptable

I have nothing from SW that dates back last year or anything that has a date does not have my address
Is there any way of getting around this? If dont get my fees paid I will not be able to attend college :(

    I'm confused.

Did you receive the grant last year as a dependent?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Im in the same boat. I sent in some car insurance and mobile phone bill forms. It's all I have. Still waiting for a response.

I might call tomorrow and check on the application.

You must have got your grant last year as a dependant ?? If so, you cannot change your status in to Independent mid course.

If you are doing the second year of the same course you started last year you should be re-applying to the VEC/Council you had the grant from last year instead of SUSI. As Achmairt advised you cannot change status mid-course. This works both ways, so if you were independent last year, as you state above, you'll still be independent this year and shouldn't have to prove it this year. It seems, from the title of your post, that you've put work on yourself by applying to SUSI instead of renewing with the grant body that paid your grant for your first year.

I had to apply to the susi because technically it is a new course. It is an add on year. My local vec will not deal with it

    That makes things clearer.

Can you get a letter from social welfare confirming the address you've had registered with them since claiming your BTEA? Is your tenancy registered with the PRTB? If so a letter from them should help. If you are getting a rent allowance, proof of that would be good. It would be no harm to get a letter from the VEC confirming that you were independent last year as well.

Thanks, I received the letter looking for further documentation yesterday and it states the lease agreement is acceptable as proof of independent residence? I sent my lease in again along with all rent receipts a letter from the council from July and bank statements with my old address and a letter explaining what happened. Hopefully it will be sorted now
