    hi,

I need a 2nd hand bike, i will be browsing the free adds for one around €50 as i dont need a serious piece of kit, its only for short journey (1.5/2k i have bad knees or i would run it)

what i need is some info/advice on buying a bike,
is there anything i should look out for regarding stolen bikes?

seems this type of sale could be filled with stolen bikes so i would like some info as to what to look out for/report if i suspect something.

codes/serial numbers/other methods of id etc.

I haven't owned a bike for 20+ years so im not sure which methods are being used these days.

Simply ask them for the serial number of the bike. If they're unwilling to give it or make excuses then look elsewhere.

To be honest for 50 euro your looking at the absolute bottom of the pile in terms of quality and what your actually buying for that price is someone's rubbish that they want rid of. I don't think your going to have to worry too much about it being stolen.

I'd recommend you spend a bit more than 50 because for that price it's probably going to need a lot of work but saying that there probably are a few bikes out there near that price that are half decent.

thanks i was just wanting to avoid buying stolen bike from someone and having to return it later when the real owner claims it, leaving me out of pocket and a scumbag bike thief up €50

serial numbers are located on the bike itself or a separate piece of paper like a receipt?

I think the majority of bikes have them stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket (pedal spindle location)
