    Hi,

I hope this is right place to post this, but I'm beginning 1st year Physics in UCC in a few weeks and in the middle of registration at the moment, just stuck on what modules to choose! I need to pick electives to the value of 15 credits.

I really want to pick ones that will be very useful, I'm thinking it would be wise to take on the computer science modules (except CS1061) as Ive always been handy with computers, so I'm thinking CS1065 and CS1068

I'm also leaning towards picking MA1057...since I've always like Maths.

Can someone tell me a bit more about the other modules? I did have a read through on the book of modules but it's still difficult to suss out it's usefulness in my course.

Can someone please advise? here is a list of the modules below (all of which are worth 5 credits except CM1000 and CM1006):

    AM1054 - Mathematical Software
    CM1000 - Introduction to Chemistry
CM1006 - Intro to Chem for Physicists and Mathematicia
    CS1061 - Programming in C
CS1065 - Computer Applications with Visual Basic
CS1068 - Introductory Programming in Python
MA1057 - Introduction to Abstract Algebra
PY1054 - Special Topics in Physics
ST1051 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics

    Thank you.

MA1057 is compulsory if you want to do the joint maths and physics course from second year onwards.

AM1054 is compulsory if you want to do the joint applied maths and physics course from second year onwards.

CM1000 is compulsory if you want to do the joint chemistry and physics course from second year onwards.

Do CS1061 - Programming in C, and then grab the notes from the other CS and teach yourself.

It's harder to do it the other way around. C will give you a good grounding, that makes it easier to understand and use other languages.

I'd advise against doing CM1000 anyway if you've done leaving cert Chemistry, it's pretty much just the leaving cert honours course with a bit of extra organic chemistry thrown in.
