IP camera server/hardware recording solution recommendations?

    Hi,
I have a batch of Axis webcams and I want to setup a central recording unit/server. It could be a mini server running windows running a suggested specialised software or a standalone bit of kit (embedded software?) which can record the video streams from webcam IP addresses, maybe detecting motion or just recording the past 24 hours on a rotation - I'm kinda new to this home security lark :)

Don't want to use cloud solutions as that relies on a net connection which isn't currently reliable unfortunately :(

    Recommendations folks?

have a look at blue iris, icatcher, milestone etc.

I looked at doing this previously and it starts getting troublesome.

    The issues I found were:

    1) You need IP cameras that works in the dark (the ones with the LED lights) and they won't work by pointing them outside from inside a window as the glare from the LED lights reflect off the glass window.

    2) As a result of that you will need them mounted on an external wall and then you have to have at least a power line running from inside your house to outside.

    3) You can look at external wireless nightvision IP cameras but you still have to power them and they start getting expensive. If it is not wireless then you have to run ethernet cables probably into the attic and down into the PC/router.

    4) You have to have a PC running 24*7.

    5) The monitoring software I used (ispyconnect.com) is fairly ok but prone to a lot of false alerts e.g. bird flies across camera, rain, and screen interference on the monitor that the software picks up as an alert. I was getting about 5 alerts a night and all were false.

    6) Wireless cameras will eat up your wireless netork capacity so it will affect your internet usage on laptops etc.

After a few weeks of researching I decided if I was going to do something like this I would go the normal CCTV route and get it installed and set up for about €500. You can view the cameras on your Iphone as well.

Cool stuff, will look into those.

Anyone have any recommendations of other systems which don't require a Windows box. Like one of those DVR style boxes
    4) You have to have a PC running 24*7.

I want to avoid this if possible
