Would you throw away your insurance documents once you take the disk off them?

The NCT cert is the proof of a valid test...not the disk. If you did throw it away then I think you will have to pay for a new cert to produce.

you pay your car tax, put the disk in , they dont ask how or when you paid it, the disk is enough

insurance is another kettle of fish

They are different things though. A genuine tax disk is proof of road tax paid.

Only insurance cert and NCT cert are proof of insurance and NCT.

thanks, it realy the first iv ever considered that the disk isnt enough, i cant fathom that we cant have the same system for tax and nct. ie; a genuine nct disk is proof of a nct passing.

I agree, in fact all the garda has to do is check the computer system to see if your car has valid tax/NCT/insurance etc.

Another problem with getting rid of the cert is if you wanted to sell the car, some people would walk away from a car with a disk in the window but no cert assuming there was something dodgy with the disk/car.

Then why dont we display them in our windows, I think most people think having the disc is valid proof, but then if stopped a Guard can ask to see your cert(insurance)

Do people not keep these as part of their service history:confused:

And as I type this I remember what country I'm in. :(

Because they contain too much information to be condensed to a small area of the windscreen (particularly insurance, NCT not so much so).

A replacement can be obtained easily enough (http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/vehicle_standards/national_car_test.html)

The ironic thing is you have to get something signed off the guards and pay €12.70 for a new one. :)

Yes, before reading on boards to the contrary; I would not have put much value on these forms as there was nothing on the forms that said to keep them as they are important.

Was your car in roadworthy condition when you were stopped? Not sure what difference an NCT Cert would make but there must be some reason for being asked to produce it.

car was perfect, no probs with tax
    just your usual prick cop.
same as would never have thought of keeping the 'wrapping' for the disk
