New car - Danger of keying

    Just bought an 07 A6 2.7TDI Quattro (I.e. a proper Audi :D)

At present, the paintwork is immaculate. It's black and that presents a bit of a problem. Every single car I've bought over the past few years has been keyed by (I'm almost certain but no hard evidence) my next door neighbor. Short of permanently parking my car away from the house (No garage or driveway space), i'm stuck for ideas on how to protect the car. Confronting the neighbor is out of the question as is contacting the guards as I've no evidence.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Could you install a discreet cctv camera out of sight to catch them?

CCTV camera and sensor activated light and don't park it on the road

Edit: I wouldn't have bought such a nice car if i didn't have a driveway, not much you can do tbh

I do have a driveway. The only problem is that there's an A4 I have off the road that I'm working on occupying the space. CCTV may be an option but I have doubts that will deter them. I'd prefer some method of protecting the car from mindless vandalism rather than a way to catch them.

Would a clear wrap keep the bodywork safe?

Move the A6 and park the A4 blocking it in until you have the CCTV and sensor light installed

    Clifford Alarm with proximity warning?

What if the person is wearing a scarf, baseball cap and hoody??

And if it is at night too.

Rather pointless and waste of money too, imo.

So there is a guy who goes and keys shiny cars in neighborhood for no reason ?

Could it be related to where these cars are parked ?

There are strange people who thinks area around their home is owned by them by default and can't communicate their issues properly.

Would it go off with something as small as a keying though?

They light will come on before they get close enough to do any damage which will scare most scrotes off, along with a proximity alarm it would deter all but the most determined jackasses.

Lets just be clear there is no 100% protection from this only deterrant

How many cars in the past have gotten this treatment, if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds fairly strange for it to happen consistently with each new car you get.

How many ways are there to avoid being identified on camera, at night where most consumer ones are fairly poor anyway. All it takes is a few clothing items

Sure, but then it's already done, and they're doing a legger as the alarm is going off and you get up to have a look. Won't prove who it was either.

Some people are pure nutjobs, I wouldn't put it past some people, if they really have a grudge against someone.

Being honest, the only way you're going to be sure it won't happen is to move. If you're so sure that it is your neighbor anyway, it might not be the worst idea.

... I'd invest in a bottle of touch up paint as its inevitable that someone is going to scrape of it, happened to me and i even caught someone pranging my car with their door  . would you seriously pay 1k plus to get a clear wrap? just enjoy the car and get the paint restored after 12 - 18 months.

    That's so sickening. Il NEVER buy a shiny new car again : both mine gave been progressively wrecked by other peoples carelessness ;
Spent 3k on a bodywork fix-up ( insurance job) and came out of the shops one day & someone had driven into it & wrecked it :(

If it's your neighbour & that sounds v likely go with the CCTV ; a big obvious job. Should frighten them off ; cowards never like to be caught.

Thou I'd put it in the driveway : mist likely that's what'd pissing them off : are you blocking a grass verge/ outside their house ? ... Not that that OKs it, but it's too frequent outside your house not to be a vendetta..

( bad break-up? Girls can be very evil :0

A big factor is no risk, cctv proximity alarm and sensor activated lighting will change all that

I guess I'm not as OCD as most people, I'm happy for the car to get a paint work restore every two years fcuk the begrudges OP enjoy the car, although I lost my spare set of car keys once and kept dreaming of dropping my keys down a drain.. to this day I avoid walking over drains, even though i have a spare set.

and stick a cheapo camera with a load of IR leds in it, its 76cm long and 27cm wide, its the right size that even some gear head scrote will notice it coming close to your gaff. Put that up on the front facing the car, then put a 2nd tiny dome camera in the eaves of your roof pointing at your neighbour you suspects garden, even if he does come along in glasses and a hood youll see him going back into his garden afterwards, at that point you can involve the gards or do whatever else is necessary to make sure he never holds a set of keys again

CCTV for sure. Although I would try park in the garden. Sounds like a right jealous cnut alright. I'm putting cctv at front of house. I've only had dust caps stolen from my car twice in the last few weeks, but I wan't to get the cctv anyway, in case a jealous fcuk does more.

Key it yourself just before you drive it out of the showroom. Scrawl "Ha, beat you to it!" onto one of the doors. That'll teach him.

What kind of mpg do you get out of the TDI? Also, has it all the features, cruise, etc and is it 6 speed or tiptronic?

Also, just whisper to your neighbour that not if, but when you catch someone keying your car that you will end him by keying his face :)

if you could get your hands on one of these and stick it in the garden you wont be keyed again.:)

Congrats on the new car, I love the 07 A6's, much nicer shape than the new ones. I have my A8 parked in my drive, but being so long the arse sticks out a foot or 2, if you suspect someone is going to damage the car then head to b&q, get a floodlight with sensor for the front of the house and a CCTV kit, a couple of dome cameras in the eaves above your front windows would be perfect, maybe a discreet sticker on the drivers window saying the car is monitored by CCTV.

Unfortunately this country doesn't cater for big saloon cars, and you will get scratches and dings at some stage. I've some from idiots in car parks, even when I go over the far side and take 2 spaces some fool parks too close.....this is Ireland, we can't have nice things because people treat their property like crap, and therefor see no problem treating other people property like crap!

No idea about MPG, less than six hours old at the moment. It's a tiptronic quattro with all (Or most of :P) the fixings. It's amazing how much more nimble it feels compared to the 5 Series/E-Class.

Worried sick about having the car out of my sight but fingers crossed they'll stay well away for tonight at least. I think i'll go for a floodlight and a CCTV system. They're a middle class family, not some hoodie-clad scummers so hopefully they'll be too petrified of being caught.

I get about 7.4-7.8 ltr/100km on my 3.0 Tdi, on the motorway, drops way down in city driving.

Seems really strange that all your cars have been keyed, are they your next door neighbours? Have you ever had any problems with them? I'd deffo park the A6 in the drive though, and move the A4 onto the road, better view with CCTV too.

Did the A6 come fitted with the paddle shif steering wheel? Absolutely my favourite part of the A8 :)

FFS OP go eat a couple of Snickers Bars, you are crawling around there like a wimp!

Engage your neighbour in conversation, e.g. when cutting the hedge or even accidently block his gate so he has to call into you; tell him about your new car and the 4 previous that have been keyed; how upset you are; you have a fair good idea who dunnit; has HE ever had a car keyed? What'd he think if some wonker keyed his car; what'd HE do if someone keyed his car; us neighbours need to look out for each other etc. You gotta turn this around so HE is worrying.

Anyways I hope it works out. Me, i got a great deal on a car because it had been keyed by some S.O.B. and the PO didn't want it; but it didn't worry me.

All well and good in theory but it's obvious that if it is actually the OPs neighbour who is doing this than he really doesn't think the OP is the sort to do anything about it.

Folks instinctively know where they stand in the primitive pecking order stakes and if the OPs neighbour had any fear of or even respect for the OP he wouldn't be doing this.

Instead of worrying I reckon the OPs neighbour would key it twice if the OP follows your advice.

I might well be wrong but I doubt it unfortunately.

Forget about cameras and all that shíte...
the best deterrent is a baseball bat...make sure he sees you putting it into the boot and even better if you start fondling it etc while he's looking on while whispering sweet nothings to the bat..do this on a daily basis basis and he'll get the message...if that doesn't deter him then nothing will.

Put the wheel in full lock and leave a brick on the accelerator. Do this every night. The car will be driving in a constant circle so the neighbour wont be able to key it. Simples!

Am I missing something here? If your neighbour or anyone else wants to key your car nothing you do short of garaging it will stop them. Desperate situation though and I wish very bad things upon them.

    Hire an actor / stuntman
Stage a fight in full veiw of ur neighbours after catching him keying ur car ?

Ps .. you need to win the fight
And an ambulance might be a nice touch

Wait in the backseat of the car for him with a bat. When he makes his move jump out and beat him to within an inch of his worthless car keying life. Enjoy the next 10 years in prison knowing you did other car owners a favour. God bless you.

Last year when I was 17, I learned to drive on an A4 1.9TDI (With accompanied driver insurance by Aviva). They're great cars but aren't particularly suitable if you're learning how to drive a manual. They're not as forgiving as other cars when it comes to sloppy clutch control.

As for insurance, you're going to find it's almost impossible for a 17 year old on a learner's permit will get insured to drive an A4 1.9TDI. Even third party with a huge excess would probably cost over €5000.
