Ever been in a chipper and something was fishy?

    From The Times (England): http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/ireland/article1117172.ece
IRELAND’S food-safety watch-dog has set up a unit to tackle fraud such as pollock being substituted for cod in chip shops and criminals selling counterfeit vodka diluted with methanol.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said the taskforce was designed to reduce the amount of falsely labelled food and drink being sold and would include gardai, Customs officials, environmental health officers and representatives of local authorities.

Last year, a Europol investigation resulted in the seizure of 13,000 bottles of substandard olive oil, 77 tonnes of counterfeit cheese and 30 tonnes of fake tomato sauce.
Last year, the FSAI reported that “cod” sold at 21 of 111 takeaways, fishmongers and restaurants it surveyed was pollock, hake, smelt and haddock.

Also, researchers at University College Dublin used DNA barcoding techniques to test 226 cod products being sold in supermarkets, fishmongers and takeaway outlets across Ireland and the UK. They discovered that 37 of 131 “cod” products bought in Ireland were a cheaper species of fish.

Has anyone every kopped that they were not eating what they actually ordered?
I haven't - but I will be more checking from now on!

You will be hard pushed to tell the difference between pollock and cod I would say, they are pretty similar.

How? Every time you buy a cod and chips, you'll send a sample to the lab?

It's all a big cod. Or else a red herring.

'Hic' , can I has a leg of cod and a snatch box, pleesh ?

There's a fair few chippers around here that straight up tell you that you're not going to get cod. They don't even advertise that it's cod, just that it's fish and they'll tell you what fish it is that week when you ask for fish.

There's even a couple of "gourmet" chippers. Ones that give you a choice in what fish you want. So you can get cod you'll just pay a lot more for it. I'd prefer if all chippers did this. I like having different fish, especially when I can opt for a cheaper fish or even one I prefer more (shock! Horror! People in Ireland actually have a preference in fish!)

I suppose you wouldn't notice if you didn't know your fish.

I would. I'd be angry. Very angry. I fucking love cod...

They didn't know it was counterfeit - which also might explain in some cases why some bottles were so cheap?

Isn't it old news about cod not actually being cod most of the time ?

Err, why are people commenting about the cod? Vodka diluted with methanol will kill. Talk about ignoring the important issue.

One of the biggest problems I had encountered with chippers, particularly busy ones after hours is being short changed. Something I am always observant of when I hand over cash. There was one in Ennis notorious for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭Colmustard

I don't know either the fish is nice or not, which is about how much I care.

I have been to chippers and they had no fish when I asked why they said there was none at the market.

Cod is becoming an endangered specie, this wont help their beleaguered stocks.

Our local chipper's a load of pollocks.

Cod stocks are so low they shouldn't be serving it anywhere, imo. Plenty of other delicious substitutes, and white fish is all fairly similar.

    Tis just codology altogether :pac:

I always order haddock or some other substitute anyway. I think it's fair enough in most cases for a chipper to call their fish cod. It's not a restaurant, just a chipper, and people will demand cod just because it's the done thing and they think it's the best fish, when really they wouldn't notice the difference. For a meal costing under €10, a case of false advertising that helps save the depleting cod population and lets people wrongly convinced they need cod believe they're getting what they want isn't much of a crime in my opinion. Everyone goes away happy.

The chipper gets to save money by buying cheaper fish.
The customer gets the satisfaction of thinking they've gotten their cod.
The cod get to live to see another day.
    Win win.

Why would you be happy with this?

If I'm paying full price I want cod

If you're serving me godsknowswhat from Vietnam then no way am I paying cod prices

They were doing this in the UK before WWII, where a tasty portion of rock salmon inevitably entailed getting a serving of dogfish or some other coarse throwaway.

Just like Maccy D's and their 100% Irish "beef".

I won't ruin your appetites by drilling down into what said beef actually consists of.

Not suprised to hear Chippers selling other fish off as cod. But the tonnes of tomato sauce being counterfeited is mad! :pac:

You'd want to know a halibut lot about fish to tell the difference :-)

IMO, hake makes the best fish n chips anyway.

As far as I know Calvita cheese isn't cheese at all. Has a number of components that go into to make it similiar to cheese, but not actually cheese.

Uninteresting fact: A lot of Pizza places will sell pizzas as having "ham" on them. Lot of them don't use any pork products as they are halal so use turkey ham instead. /yawning

I don't want to live on this planet any more.

If I'm not mistaken, I'd say Easisingles are not cheese either. Cheese in general is so much tastier in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Belgium and that general region.

    No, do tell!

As for cod, personally I'd rather eat a less endangered fish. Plus it's cheaper. I don't know why people are so insistant on having cod.
