    Cost around 4-5k.
    Petrol.
Engine no bigger then 1.6 due to tax.
    Medium sized card.
    Quick enough.
    No older then 2005.
    Millage no more then 45k.
    Good mpg.

Shouldn't the age and mileage limits be related to the actual car? You need to get out there and start driving as broad a range of cars as possible to find out what suits you - there's no single 'best' make/model out there.

45K would be very little use for a 7 year old car. Be more open to bit more then that you want a car that will last but for that budget getting one above 2005 and low miles wont be easy.

Look at Skoda Fabia 1.2 onwards, Octavia 1.4 onwards, Ford Fiesta 1.2 onwards, Ford Focus 1.4 onwards, Mazda 2 or 3, VW Polo or Golf

Increasing engine size to 1.8 would open up alot more options, if it's a 1.6 petrol it's gonna use a fair amount of petrol anyway more than most modern 1.8's tbh

If i was after a car like that i would probly opt for a diesel over a sub 1.6 petrol engine for comfort alone

Avoid 1.4 Octavia/Golf like the plague it's a terrible engine.

1.6 after that with petrol prices you would be mad.

If town driving smaller engine the better long runs 1.6 defo enough these days

Engine size makes very little odds, for instance a 1.8 Mazda 6 will get much better mpg than a Ford focus 1.6.

Then again it sounds to me like the OP should just get a diesel instead

I thought going for diesel was all about how many miles you did. Im pretty sure I would do under 15k a year.

Not really tbh, i do similar and if i switched from my car to a diesel version i would get double the mpg and be spendling less per litre so just under half my current fuel costs.

An economical petrol like an Avensis/Mazda 6 can get mid 40mpg figureds though.

Do you want a saloon or hatchback ?
