Why is it when some scumbag criminal gets murdered and they happen to have previously sown their filthy seed to produce more criminal offspring, the media always refers to them as "Dad" or "Mam" in the headlines?

E.g. "Dad shot ..." or "Dad stabbed ..."

You read the article and you find this person as X number of previous convictions, known criminal, known scumbag etc.

Why refer to them as Dad?

I'm not saying we should celebrate the death of someone, but for the media use terms like "Dad" when referring to a career criminal is just strange.

"Dad" is a soft term. The headlines usually give you the impression of some stand up guy who was a great father, that being a Dad was this persons defining feature.

In truth the defining feature of the person was that they were involved heavily in crime and the reason they died was a direct result of that.

They might be scum to some people but that does not change the fact thy are also a parent to a child who loves them and who will be devestated over their death.

Also for tabloids 'dad' saves space as opposed to 'career criminal'

Probly because it's not unusual for tough areas to have higher than average crime\murder statistics.Just because the victim had a "history" it doesn't take away the fact they had a family and it's more respectful.
