If an unmarked car catches you speeding do they have to follow you to issue the points & fine?
    I was going about 60kph in a 50kph zone

This wasn't a gatso van. One guard in an unmarked car, he was either pointing the gun through the windscreen or the little camera on the front of the car picked it up.
As I drove past he beeped & made a gesture with his hand.
Surely he wouldn't do that if i was going to be fined & get points?

Depends on the gesture. Since you're female, he probably let you off.

I reckon your safe too, take it as a warning. That said, Im only guessing and you will just have to wait and see.

    Ok, thanks.
    When should I know?
Sorry for all the questions but I've never been caught speeding before. I rarely speed, I just wasn't concentrating on my surroundings.

You won't receive any fine or points. Don't worry about it. You only got a finger wagging, you would have been pulled over if it was more serious.

Got my first ever speeding fine last month. Was doing 60kph in a 50kph zone too. Damn :(

Similiar thing happened to me two weeks ago. Was driving along in a 50km zone, driving at about 60kph. Drove past a traffic corps car which was sitting along the road side. I was definitely driving over the limit. I haven't got anything in the post yet but if I was caught, how long would it take to the fine or whatever out in the post?

I got mine after 11 days

If he didn't bother with catching up and getting your details from you it's less likely something will come of it.
Probably he just indicated "don't do it again".

If your speedo said 60 then you likely were not going much over 50 anyway. Car speedo`s tend to over read the speed a little.

Maybe, but a little is 3-4 km over not 10.

OP if you got a finger wagging from a Guard then I wouldn't worry, they're usually all serious and indignant, that would have been just a reminder to watch your speed.

Why do you think it was an unmarked car and not just a citizen wagging the finger, my OH got a finger wagging from a guy in a tractor last week (even though he was the one who had just cut out) I've heard of a shortage of Garda cars, but I don't think they've resorted to tractors yet.

If the car is under reading, which they usually do due to the legal requirement that they don`t over read, then they wont be 10kph over the limit when the car dial says 60.
