Registration doesn't close if you take registration on the day...

How can you expect it to run smoothly/on time if the brackets can't be made until the very last minute.

i just felt that between the re scheduling and battlezone being on the same day maybe the timing wasnt great and guys that are screming out for more comps all year maybe at the next one.

I think if we are ever to have a higher level of attendence and activity within the bjj 'community' in Ireland, we have to get over this ****e of thinking an mma event has anything to do with a jiu jitsu competition.

    ?????????????

We had 3 guys fighting in Battlezone who probably would have competed in this if it hadn't clashed.

On the contrary, you need to respect the fact that they are not as separate as you would like to think.

    Especially in a NoGi competition.

how many people were on that mma show? lets say there was 15 fights, meaning there was 30 people involved. All of whom obviously wouldn't have been interested in competing at this competition but for arguments sake lets say they were.

Thats 30 extra people, all the spectators could have attended both, anyone planning on just spectating the mma event could have competed in the morning. 30 extra people is nothing to be scoffed at but still doesnt change much.

I saw in another thread a request for a jiu jitsu tournament to be put back because there was a 'low kick show' on that same day.

    cool :)

p.s I dont think the attendance here had anything to do with an MMA event.

Why do u believe it was low?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 426 ✭✭Shane Fitz

Jason, it was advertised as low kick, presumably they were using a rule set that forbade high kicks.

I think he ment why the attendance was low.

I think the quality of the tournament is not what it used to be, I remember the first couple of grab and pull competitions were good, the one in greystones was their best in my memory. The last one I attended was poorly organised (in my opinion), there were no medical staff at all (resulting in multiple ambulance calls).

Also the guys running the tournament arent based over here, the advertising was minimal (this thread). I think when the IBJJA decides to run tournaments the attendance will be higher as we know who we are supporting when we enter and it would be much better advertised in the different academies around the country.

To me this is just a couple of lads coming over to make a few quid. Which would be fine if the tournament was as good as it was the first couple of times ,but unfortunately it isnt :)

U do realise how much time , effort and organisational skills goes into making a day like this take place, a while back there were complaints of a lack of competitions both in gi and no gi but when these opportunities come along you still complain some people just can't be pleased.

If this is the case then why was there such a small turnout to this tournament?

i was there and competed on saturday , i thought it was a decent competition , great easily accessable venue with showers changing rooms a restaraunt/take away up stairs , started reasonably on time and the only reason it was late was the competitors who showed up late ( if the torres team from the north can be down within ten minutes of the start time i dont see why everybody else cant be there on time) , brackets were put up (late) the night before , dont think anybody who was there was dissappointed with what they got . only negative i had was i did not see any medics there which isnt good enough , no excuses.
i genuinely didnt see much of a difference with it , outside of the medics and the last grapplepalooza (which was great) except for one big difference , far less competitors turned out

It was originally very well run, ran on time and was well supported. I think Chris has hit the nail on the head above and highlighted the two issues which have effected this competition and how well it is currently being supported.

    - It isnt advertised as well as it could be, or as well as it used to be. Advertising and communication with your target audience through internet forums and facebook must be the cheapest and most effective way to ensure your competition is well supported. This has been lacking and could be easily improved for future competitions.

    - The lack of medical staff, and the fact that the last few events have run more than an hour behind schedule. Competitors don’t like waiting around for hours to compete when they have a schedule start time for their bracket. It’s much harder to judge a warm-up and burning up nervous energy for a prolonged period can take it out of you.

I don’t think Battlezone being on the same day had a major impact on the attendance.

I would have liked to compete on the weekend, but unfortunately I was injured. I did pop along to check out the guys in my weight class, and stuck around to watch John Sheridan tear it up in his weight class and the absolute. The grappling on display in the two hours I was there was of excellent quality.

PS: I’m not trying to criticise Gus and the guys at Grab&Pull. I hope they continue to run competitions here in Ireland, and I hope the fix these small issues to get these competitions back to their former quality.

I’ve certainly enjoyed competing in them in the past, and I’ll continue to support them.

    Tom

I never have and never will compete at an event that does not have medical staff.
