    A hypothetical question.

If I bought a northern registered car in the south, that had been in the country for over a year and sold it to a "friend" in the north and repurchased it from him and then VRT'D AND nct'd it within a week of purchasing it from my friend in the north could I avoid potential VRT penalties and fines for the car not having been VRT'd by the previous southern owner?

The car is still registered to an owner in northern Ireland.

If you genuinely just bought it, you would not be liable to the sellers VRT fines or whatever. I'd say buy it, get a receipt with full details, go straight to the NCTS for an appointment. To all intents and purposes, you just bought it off the registered owner in the North and imported it (maybe he delivered it to you...;) )

Its the Seller who has commited an offence by selling it and by not re-registering it, not you....(unless you are that man of course...;) )

VRT it with a current receipt, as it says on the notice in the NCT/VRT office, "if you don't have a receipt, write one yourself."

Thanks for the replies. I just dont want to be in a position where I am charged back dated VRT penalties etc.

If I was to register this car at the NCT/VRT centre will my PPS number determine what county reg the car is given or can I use an address in a different county for registering the car in?

As long as it has'nt come to the notice of customs before now you'll be ok.
Your reg will be as is shown on your proof of address ie bank statement/ utility bill etc.
