Now I give way to cyclists on the pre marked lanes on the roads and try and accommodate them but why the HELL do you have to cycle on the roads when the government BUILT you a cycle path?? I dont drive on you cycle lanes..!

I'll always use a cycle lane - when it's safe to do so. You'd be surprised how often it isn't as they are either badly designed or badly maintained & you're forced onto the normal road.

Don't tell anyone but I've seen car's drive up BUS lanes... i mean, why would the government paint lines for b100dy bus's!?

Search the forum for "cycle lanes". This question has been asked and answered at great length and in huge detail many many times.

If you actually got that funky bike you were asking about a few months back then take it out and spend some time using (or trying to use) as many of those cycle lanes as you can find. You'll get your question about why people don't use them answered quite quickly that way.

You could try these ones or these or these.

OP - we could explain it to you but if you actually want to understand (rather than just gripe on the internet) how about getting out on a bike and trying to use some of the "facilities" cycling have been provided with? A few brushes with death and a puncture or two will be very educational.

Go on, tell us where this happened - What road was the cyclist on and exactly where on the road was s/he not using the cycle lane?

My God!! Road user uses roads!:D

Personally I only use them when it's safe, convenient and the chances of puncturing are less than 10%.

Cycling lanes in this wet wind swept country are used to store all the crap that normally builds up elsewhere until it breaks down naturally. Even the Fire Brigade use them to store stuff in......

They are, with some notable exceptions, badly thought out, not at all well designed and poorly maintained.....e.g.........

There's more examples in this Flickr photostream.

The gubbernment built them? Well, in that case, I best avoid them. Bit of a predicament though... I didn't pay my road tax this year, nor my cycle path tax... where should I cycle? The footpad?

Heard a great one from a stupid jogger the other day running in the cycle lane:

    "There's plenty of room".

Some arse had parked his BMW F800 in the canal cyclepath outside the Barge pub last night.

Motorists routinely park in, undertake in and generally encroach in cyclepaths so its no surprise that cyclists aren't always happy staying in them.

It's their colour, it does nothing for my complexion, it makes me look drawn and washed out. And I have no outfits to match it either, it's quite the sartorial dilemma.

Road tarmac, on the other hand, brings out the natural colour in my cheeks, it's black so therefore slimming as we all know, it goes with a lot of my clothing and, frankly, makes me look simply fabulous.

Gok Wan says no to cycle lanes...

The government also gave you an education, you SHOULD really use it.
