Almera - wits end

At the title goes I'm now at my wits end regarding my 04 1.5petrol Almera.

I've posted previously regarding the issue. In summary after driving for 10/12 miles the engine would shudder and the car seriously lacked in power.

I brought it to the mechanic who was presented with the 'cam shaft sensor error' and duly replaced this. Didn't work.

I brought it back and suggested through forums like that this there was a possibility it could have been the timing chain issue. He researched it himself and through other mechanics was under the impression that I was right and did the needful with the timing chain.

I got the car back last night and drove to work (16 miles) this morning. Car didn't seem too bad but I had my doubts. Lo and behold on my way hope again the same fuppin thing happened :mad::mad: - engine shudder and loss of power.

At this stage I'm peed off with the stupid car and If I had the money I'd trade it in.

Basically I'm not at a loss as to what the hell is wrong with it. Has anyone any ideas what else I can look at to solve this issue. Any suggestions most welcome.

I had the same problem. It's a common problem with almeras and it's caused by a streched timing chain. You need to get a new timing chain, pullys and tensior done on it.

It's a full days labour to get done.

Have you had the timing chain replaced?

    How much would this cost

I think the timing chain kit cost me €300 including oil and a new oil filter as that needs to be done at the same time and €150 at an Indy garage

Get garage to deliver on the service that you paid for. i.e fix the car.

Just an independent lad who did it.

Is there any chance it might be a coil? Someone mentioned that to me.

Firstly how much did you pay to have the timing chain replaced?

Secondly has your warning light gone off and when did it go off?

If your timing chain was wanked there is a real possibility you have done more damage i.e bent valves etc. But you wouldn't need to drive it far to realise that, so its unlikely.

The timing chain change cost me €300 in total. I do believe he changed it because he was giving out loads about having to strip the car down.

The warning light was off when I got the car back however when the engine shuddered it went on again. It seemed find at first when obviously not the way now.

Funny thing is if I leave the car for an hour or two it'll drive away again for 10/12 miles and then the same thing happens again.

For €300 he obviously only changed the chain itself....a pointless excersise. You need to change the full kit, i.e chain, tensioner, guides, cam and crank gears etc.

You also need to have the car diagnosed properly to see if there is an issue with the wiring/signal to or from the sensors.

That seems very cheap to be honest I would be wondering was it only the chain itself that was changed. Which may in itself be the problem.

Edit: Nissan Doctor was before me.

He did mention to me that it was a kit he was buying but I'm calling to him later so will have a chat.

How much will a full diagnostic check be?

Thanks for the help - its appreciated.

Possibly cam or crank sensor problem! Seen it before. They do give trouble

They rarely ever give trouble, Cam/crank sensor fault codes registered are due to chain issues in the vast majority of cases.

Is there a chain on the cam? Herselfs almera has 133k on it now. Would it be wise to get it changed? I don't know if it was ever done

I had a 05 Almera N16 in a few weeks ago. Owner had the chain, tensioner and sprockets replaced by another garage. Engine management light was still on, car was hard started, very sluggish and hard on petrol. PLugged in car to diagnostice tester and there was cam and crank sensor faults. Cleared these and drove car. Light came on again. Crank sensor fault came up. Replaced this and it's been perfect since

hi i had 3door 01 almera 1.8 auto , back in 2011 had 70000 miles on it , it started to lose power while driving , could do 50mph on the flat but would crawl up a hill , however got it checked and it cam up lamda sensor . so got it replaced py a garage in fairveiw, and asked them to put in the sensor recommed by nissan it cost 280 euros , so went straight down to work in wicklow , it started to do the same thing , brought it back they checked it , and said it might be the petrol pump, so got used petrol pump put it in costing another 350, plus 280 for a full service , and the fault was still there ,
14 months later i was visiting a company for my work, and there was a mechanic working on a car nearby , i just for crack told him what was happing to my car , low and behold , he says i was trained on almears , and the fault is common on this car , and it can fool alot of people , he said it was " mass air flow sensor " he said get 1 from salvage it cost 50 euro much dearer new and he fitted for 20 , car now works perfect, and i did not need all the other parts hope this might help you
