    Story from Avherald today....

Incident: Emirates B773 near Ho Chi Minh City on Aug 22nd 2012, baby EK

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Aug 30th 2012 19:14Z, last updated Thursday, Aug 30th 2012 19:14Z
An Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-300, registration A6-EBL performing flight EK-332 from Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to Manila (Philippines), was enroute over the Gulf of Thailand when a woman pregnant in her 27th week went into labour. Two nurses aboard the aircraft assisted with the birth, while the flight crew diverted the aircraft to Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). The boy was born while descending towards Vietnam and needed oxygen due to breathing difficulties. After safe landing mother and boy were taken to a local hospital, where the baby boy remains in intensive care, the mother was found in good condition.

The aircraft reached Manila with a delay of 2:45 hours.

The parents later announced they named the boy "Ek" after the airline's IATA Code.

I have heard the tale of about a baby boy being born on an Aer Lingus B747 in the early/mids 1980's and apparently the parents named him Patrick after the name of the plane he was on.

I thought you were not allowed to fly after 20 wks or something ?

Didn't we have a thread about this and the nationality of the baby , ie would it be the country of arrival/departure or the registration of the aircraft ?

Lucky they were not on FR , they would have been charged for the seat :-)

The kid was lucky. He could have been called Ho Chi Minh!

So we already have the Mile High Club, what membership name should we bestow on the mother or child?

That explains a lot...we all have Irish names in my family, well all of us apart from my brother Boeing 747-200.

In the Aer Lingus published 75th anniversary book, the story is in that but they say it was when the plane was wet-leased to TAP.

You can get doctors permission to travel later than that. In addition in some circumstances the mother tells a fib to be allowed travel, often in order to ensure the child is born in a certain country.
