    A trail of oil.

Seriously though, just watch the oil level on those engines, they are known for using it.

    Why a 1.4?

    Just buy a Focus instead.

Dreadful cars them MK4 golfs, especially the 1.4. Burns oil like there's no tomorrow. Loads of other issues. catalytic converters, engine warning light staying on "is normal" they say etc.

Boring as hell to drive as well.

I'd agree with most of the above, almost of of the rivals are better, more reliable, cars.

The main issues that that generation of 1.4 golf suffer from is, as mentioned, oil burning(normally failing valve stem seals and/or piston rings), the valve guides are also prone to premature wear causing various engine faults.

Certain electrics can give bother(window switches etc) and its very common for the door handle mechanisms to fail meaning the door can't be opened from the inside/outside...or both.

Base spec models are very poorly equipped and the handling is poor compared to others. The 1.4 is very underpowered for the weight of the car.

IMO, the only reason to buy a MK4 golf 1.4 over, say, a Focus or Astra of the same period is either you like blue lit dials or can't see past the VW badge.
