Tax relief for college fees in Queens NI?

    Hello,

My first post in boards tax...

My sister in law did a 5 year degree in Queens Belfast finishing 2012. As this was a second degree, her parents paid for this. Are they entitled to tax relief at the standard rate on the amounts paid over these years? The amounts paid per year would be €3000-4000 per year.

    Thanks in advance,
    OS

The answers are all here: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it31.html

    Colleges outside the State qualify.

Yes should be able to claim tax relief on a course in NI as I think relief applies to Universities in other EU member states.
Tax relief is at standard rate i.e. 20%. There is a 4 year time limit to claim though so if it was 5 years long might not get relief for the first year.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks guys,
She actually applied last year for this and was refused but I can see no reason why?? I'll get them to ring the revenue and chase it up.

Did she apply or did her parents apply?
If she applied she would have needed to have been working and paying tax here, otherwise she would not be entitled to relief.
