    Dell XPS M1530
    Vista
    4GB ram

    Hi all,

I have a problem with the keyboard on the above laptop.

All was fine this morning when all of a sudden it seemed that a key was stuck and I couldn't do anything with it. I switched it off and went to work expecting it to be ok this evening.

If I start it up now the keyboard won't do anything for me, except possibly locking a key down, but not the same key as previously! I can only log into windows using the fingerprint scanner.

I looked at the manual which sent me to Dell diagnostics, but I can't access system setup, because pressing f12 or fn at the right time doesn't even work!

Any advice or help would be appreciated - I need this thing going again quickly for college work!

    Luke

    First thing is first

    Connect an external keyboard

If this is a software issue the fastest solution would be to

    restore your Windows settings

    or

    reinstalling Windows

You mentioned that you wanted to sort this asap right ?

Try remove the key in question, there may be some gunk/junk stuck under there ;)

...the key should simply pop up from the board using a credit card or similar...

Thanks for the replies. I really needed this done quickly, so I brought the laptop into Right-Click on Dawson Street in Dublin at lunch time.

The very helpful guy behind the counter removed the battery, pressed the power button for a second or two, replaced the battery and it worked perfectly when we started it up!

Apparently this trick removes any static static build up, which can cause all kings of funny problems.

Handy tip I think as a first check, and certainly a new one for me.

Right Click is to be recommended by the way - I've dealt with them a few times.

    Thanks again for the replies.
