Hey folks, after weeks of searching online/by phone I eventually found a replacement headlight for my mg zs cracked headlight. However when it arrived by post it had a large scratch, just wondering if it's worth my while trying to sand out the scratch or would I be wasting my time??

It might be possible to sand it out if it's not too deep. After you have sanded, you need to use a D/A buffer on the whole headlight and the other one too.

That looks very nasty....doubt you'll remove it fully, but will definitely make the appearance less obvious.
Also, as said, the other lens will need a polish too, so they are equal.

I wonder would that Mantis lacquer pen work to build it up and then D/A it?

Cheers for the reply folks! Yup it's quite nasty and I'm doubting myself that sanding is the way to go. I have refurbed lights in the past and got out scratches but none this bad. Maybe that lacquer pen could be an idea to try. So annoying after eventually sourcing the part!

Quick update, I tried that Mantis pen to no avail (though it has worked wonders on some scratches on the paintwork of the car, so at least it's not wasted money!). Operation sand and replace the headlight will take place on my day off tomorrow, provided it's not raining!

It's a wonder there isn't a plastic filler for this kind of thing. Then again, it mightn't be ideal as if it's done wrong, the light could be skewed.

Good to see the pen wasn't a total waste! How good is it and does it work as well as the ad claims?

Probably not quite as well as the ad claims, but it has gotten rid of a lot of the scratches I obtained in the accident where the old headlight was broken, along with a few that were already on the car. Weather pending tomorrow I'll post up pictures of any other scratches I tackle with it.
