Authorities have closed part of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after discovering what they suspect is a World War II bomb.

More an indication that it's a slow news day and humans are too good at pattern recognition.

    Or maybe it's a conspiracy

That's what other places are reporting too, that there's a hijacked plane. Nowhere reliable as of yet, mind, only the Galway Advertiser and some other forum.

Pilot was probably waving at another pilot out the window and said "Hi Jack!"

Now, what's Jack the pilot doing on the outside of the plane is a different story...

wild guess here..........theres a guy called Mohammed involved.
    oh Mohammed ...always clowning around

Apparently the pilot said "Hi" to his co pilot Jack while he was on the speaker phone to the control tower, thus the confusion.

it wasnt a mis communication, its called a loss of communication, pilots have to be in radio contact with atc, when they stop listening, its called a loss of communication, which can be mis-intereptred as a hijack by the media...

Since 2001 its standard practice that when a loss of communication happens fighter jets will intercept said pilots and either give them a friendly hello or escort them to the airport...this appears to be the latter...but its still being reported as a hijack on some places so we wont know till later, but the dutch media report it as a loss of communication...

I think the co-pilots name is actually Gene Hadd, not Jack. Gene is a bit hard of hearing so he shout at him multiple times.

The "miscommunication" claimed was indeed a loss of communication but the flight path was also erratic wihich was why ATC were trying to communicate with them. For both these reasons the flight was treated as suspicious until it landed and it was confirmed that all was well.

The bomb detonator was intact, it still had structural intergrity and it was safe enough to dig out and remove. Finding old bombs at Schiphol is not exceptional since it was very heavily shelled by the Allies during WWII. The last old bomb found there during renovations was in 2008. They have an operating practice for how to get it sorted safely and quickly.

Neither incident was very dangerous, but them occuring at once was a bizarre coincidence!
