So the favourites to get the 2014 Ryder Cup Captaincy in Gleneagles are Darren Clarke & Paul McGinley and whoever get's that one, the other is going to get Hazeltine in 2016 you would think.

Considering Padraig Harrington will be 46 by 2018 he will have to be a contender for the Ryder Cup Captaincy in Le Golf National which would make 3 Irish Captains in a row!!!

Do boardsies think this is possible or will Darren or Paul miss out. Other possible captains for Gleneagles would have to include Thomas Bjorn & Miguel Angel Jiminez

Maybe a stupid question. Just curious is there any requirements to becoming a Ryder cup captain(like you must have won a major etc) or is everyone who has a tour card eligible?

I think it will be McGinley, Jiminez (or someone else) and then Clarke.

No just a tour member but reckon you have to be in with the committee as Sandy Lyle got bumped in favour of Monty in 2010, Sandy Lyle won 2 majors, Monty won zero but is a very active member of the European Tour Players Committee.

I have been thinking about this and I would hope we don't end up having it passed around to buddies.

Bjorn I expect to be a captain due to his role he has within the tour which shouldn't make him a captain.

Maybe Lawrie will get the next Ryder Cup.

I think PH mentally isn't ready for the captain as he analysis everything to much but this could change as his career fades off. I expect him to be a captain someday but like soccer been a great player doesn't mean you will be a great manager. Faldo prime example.

I think Clarke will get it over Paul.

I'd like to see a player who has served the euro tour well over the years so I don't think the players who are based in usa should get the award even though Poulter is a Monty kind of person when it comes to the Ryder Cup.

    I'd agree I don't think there'd be 2 Irish captains in a row never mind 3 !

    Current betting 2014
    Mc Ginley 2/1
    Monty 7/2
    Clarke 6/1
    Lawrie 8/1
    Bjorn 10/1

Monty has expressed an interest in 2014, could have a strong claim as its being held in Scotland and most regard him as a good captain after Celtic manor.

I'd be off an opinion that nobody should get it more than once

I would be of the same opinion and the move to Monty instead of Sandy Lyle was to pick a Captain who was still competing at the highest level, Monty has not been competing at the highest level with 2 years bar his good finish last week.

It'll be McGinley next then up in the air after that. You would certainly expect Bjorn at some stage in the near future

Its very hard to see past these two, Thomas Bjorn & Miguel Angel Jiminez. Both are highly respected and are still playing at the very highest level.

    Jimenez? Ryder Cup captain?!

    Nah, I don't think so.

I think Bjorn next and at 10's I think there is value in it. Lawrie for Scotland.

Jimmy and Clarke could co captain and have the team play with a cigar in one hand and a drink in another

McGinley has impressed the powers that be in the last few Seve Trophies so i think he will be next up.

Bjorn in 2016, then possibly Clarke.

I don't see Jimmy being in with a shout at all tbh.

I think McGinley will be the unlucky one to miss out. The board said previously that they where keener to include continental Europe more with venues and captains.

I think if McGinley doesn't get the nod for Gleneagles he will not get a chance. Bjorn and Clarke I think will defo get a chance.

Yes I definitely think this is the case, especially seeing as Darren has emerged over the past 6 weeks as a stong contender. Whichever one of them misses out on Gleneagles will miss out indefintely.

McGinley has a great chance for 2014 imo. Seve Trophy captaincy and the fact that he's been involved in the Ryder Cup for the last decade, except for 08 (why didnt Faldo bring more vice captains? Another story....)

Bjorn perhaps for the following one, then since its France in 2018...Thomas Levet? I know he hasn't much cup experience but he said on twitter he'd love a shot. Maybe a vice captain if not the main job.

McIlroy is a cert for 2038 when it will be held on the moon :P :pac:

The bunkers should be in great shape, very big by all accounts!
Was just checking the met.ie long term forecast, very little rain forecast up there for the next 26years

Think McGinley is a good shout for 2014, then Bjorn or they might look at someone with a bit more experience playing in America for that. Doubt Monty would come back. As for more mainland europeans getting it, there have not been that many consistent europeans over the last 10 years thatw ould be coming to that age who have been involved with Ryder Cups.

Think Poulter and McDowell are good shouts for the future captaincy aswell but way down the line.
