Does it depend from Club to Club on the highest hanicap they will allow in a Competition ? Someone told me the max some clubs will allow is 24, even though you could be 28 !

Depends on the competition but if it's an open singles for instance I don't think they can stop you from playing as long as it's an official GUI handicap.

I mean, they will only take 24 instead of 28 ?

No your handicap will be 28. If this is your official handicap then i cant really see them giving you a 24 handicap in an open singles.

Why ever not??? 'They' can make any rules they wish.

Ta, yes, 28 from their site.

If I am playing rubbish, would they push me up more than .1 ?

For every qualifying comp that you are outside the "buffer zone" you will get 0.1 back however if your club feels that you are unable to play to your current handicap, they can add a shot at their discretion but this rarely happens in my club.

Just practice as often as you can and get some lessons and you won't be at 24 for long!

The best Tip I seen on this board is about Course Managment.

For example: Index 2 and a par 4, I have 6 shots for a par.
I should keep that in mind at all times !

Playing off 22 now myself and that's exactly what needs to be done, very hard to tell yourself that sometimes.

OP for someone who is starting out, your attitude and understanding of a handicap is all wrong, you should start with this question "what is the lowest handicap I can have" and take it from there.

Incorrect, my attitude is Top and if I cannot fully understand the rules, how do you expect me to win or lower my handicap ?

As I stated above, course mgt will help me lower it but you ignored that statement !

Ok I see my post went over your head completely, so I'll spell it out in real simple terms, the purpose of golf is not to get the highest handicap possible and then manage it and try to play it, the purpose is to play off the lowest handicap possible, and to do this you should forget about your handicap altogether, get lessons, practice alot and improve as quickly as you can.

I think he is just curious on how the system works. He is surely allowed to ask and inquire about handicap issues. He never said once he was trying to increase his handicap to the max or increase it at all for that matter.

Not much need for the smart tone.

Oh dear God, of course he's allowed to ask questions, I simply pointed out that he was asking the wrong question and therefore perhaps he was looking at handicaps in an incorrect manner, i.e higher the handicap the lower the tone of voice you use in which to exclaim your golfing exploits.

Hello Mr. Pot, I notice you've imagined a magic Kettle there and have started to call it black.

The lad has come on asking/eager to learn about golf, he never even hinted that he wanted to play off the highest handicap possible, he was just asking what the highest possible HC someone can be given was, and if some clubs limit people above a HC of 24 to play off 24 in competitions!

To be fair that horse you are on is so high I think what you are saying is going over most people's head.

Anyway whatever about that. Thread is getting side tracked. Op don't be afraid to ask questions in the future you will get straight answers off most people here.

In a singles competition a player must be allowed to play off his official handicap whatever it is. However in 4/balls and Team competitions some clubs do in fact limit the max handicap to 24.
