What would you get someone to congratulate them on finishing their first marathon?
    What would you have appreciated?

Something running related - framed photos and medal? new gear?
    Or something completely different?

My OH framed my DCM medal with photos of me doing it and a copy of the route and certificate. I love it :)

If I remember correctly, I would have most appreciated a chair and a bucket.

A wheelchair would even better and get wheeled from the finish line to car. Took me well over an hour (closer to 1:30) to walk from DCM finish line to the Luas on O'Connell street last year. Scrap that... a motorised wheelchair so you can go out on the piss and not have to stand or worry about a seat all night with a holder for your pint of course. Might be in bad taste though.

After DCM in 2010 around the finish area I spotted one lad sitting on the steps of one of the Georgian buildings around Merrion Square. His wife/gf came running towards him with a pint of Guinness in her hand.

Still not sure if he was happier to see her or the pint!

Anyway... The framed medal / photos seems like a nice idea. Having said that tho I dunno if I'd hang it up anywhere other than my bedroom or something... Having it on display in the sitting room for all visitors etc to see is a little bit too 'look at me - I ran a marathon' for my liking...

Good suggestion. A bit of pampering would mean a lot more than a framed medal/cert.

When I was preparing for my first in Paris the thread suggested we treat ourselves to something for all our hard work. You only do your first one once. I bought a watch for 40 euro that was reduced from 200. I wear it every day. It reminds me that if you want to achieve something, just work for it and take on the challenge.
One of the other girls got a little necklace with a little silver running shoe on it .

After my second one in Helsinki , I bought a Helsinki ring with lots of engravings on it to do with Finland and their culture. Kind of like their version of a claddagh ring. I have worn it for every single marathon and ultra I have run and its my kind of lucky charm.

After that I figured it would be pure indulgence to treat myself each time as I loved marathons so much I started doing loads of them.

IF I ever beat Mick Rice in the Connemara 100M I will buy a car :-)

What about an nice Meal, with some close Family and Friends.
That evening would be an nice idea or even the next night if they wanted some rest and relaxation!.
Be a nice way of relaying pictures and memories.
If you could include another few who done the Marathon, all the better.

You're probably right.... But that's just not me. I'm a little more low key - don't like to make a big deal out of things like that. I did the training, ran the event for ME... nobody else.

Now.... If I was winning the races that might be a different story. Something to brag about then!

a trip to the himalayas, where they would be guided up mt. everest.
only then would they know that their marathon was the better achievement.
or a jogging buggy and entry to local races.
    :-)

We have studied that photo in great detail over the last few years so I guess people are getting bored of looking at me now.
