Need Wireless Card for Sony Vaio - help?

    Hi all,

I have a Sony Vaio VPC-CA laptop with about 6 months and now the wireless card has stopped working completely. I have tried every fix on the net but the more I look the more I read the more I see that the card is a piece of manure. Even though the laptop is still under warranty I can't be bothered sending it back to Sony in Ireland for them to put a new version of the old wireless card in. Sending it to Sony in France is not on apparently.

The wireless card is an Atheros AR 5B 225 (directly from card). Could somebody recommend a replacement for this please?

One thing is I have removed the card and the model number on the card doesn't match the number that was on the machine, I did update all drivers etc but that didn't work.

    Thanks.

BIGFOOT Networks Killer-N 1103... the best there is, at a price.

Intel's Centrino Ultimate is a good bit cheaper. No match for the BIGFOOT but way better than Atheros' cheapo cards.

Edit: You'll loose Bluetooth functionality with these, neither is a combo card such as your Atheros.

Thanks very much for the reply. Never use the Bluetooth function anyway.

Will plump for the Intel I'm not a heavy internet user, I just need the thing to work.

Had the card go an a Toshiba Satellite. Got a brand new replacement and it didn't fix it. I assume it must be the bus controller.

Anyway, got an Edimax micro USB WiFi dongle and it works a treat. So small and unobtrusive it doesn't get in the way.

Couldn't purchase the Intel so I broke the bank and bought the Networks Killer instead, it arrived on Friday and I installed it yesterday. The difference is unbelievable, first time I was able to watch something on RTE player or any other stream without dropping the wireless.

    Kudos for the advice Torqay!
