I have some window boards in my house that have old masking tape on them since the time the walls were skimmed, it's not inclined to peel off as its there over a year. What's the best way of lifting it without damaging the timber? Bearing in mind I want to just varnish them After.
    Tia.

A small bit of white spirit and a cloth or a heat gun.

Removing tar, crayon, making fishing reels cast further, stoping squeaks ..... Oh and Water Dispersal , 40th attempt!

    How about petrol or acetone?

Any solvent will work, white vinegar is my own favourite.
Pour in spray bottle and soak the tape for a while, then gently scrape off.

Don't use wd40. It can cause your varnish to react if gets into the wood and your heart will be broken trying to sand it out.

As of last night, a new scraper, a hand steamer, some white spirit, and most useful of all, a patient girlfriend, is proving to work well!
