will you make up one of the dublin import plates and see if you can actually fit 131-D-120001 onto a plate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,259 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

Why are they 131 and 132?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭ION08

Now try 131-D-120001 (beaten to it!)

So has this been confirmed? Is it definitely being implemented?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭Eireplates

    There wont be 131-D-120001

This import system is not being continued from 2011 regs I believe. The change was due to a new computer system being introduced to manage registrations and the funds not being available to migrate the data from the old system to the new one.

If you import an 11 or 12 reg or later car you will get the next available number.

While the 13 thing is a big part of it, the Motor industry has also been pushing for a while to adopt a similar similar to the UK to avoid the end of year slump where jump ties wait until January to get a new plate.

The system in the UK is even more different though in that the plates run from March to end of August and then September to end of February. So a 59 plate could have been sold in September 2009 or February 2010.

This 131 and 132 is horsesh!t. Seriously, what's the point in adding the 1 or the 2? The sequence number more or less tells that anyway. The fact still remains that the number 13 (or whatever year) is still there so in the Irish context it will still be 'last years car' at the end of the year. As stated above, the UK concept is different as it spans two years. It's a lot more vague.

And then this boll0xology of not wanting a car with the number 13 on it because it's bad luck or whatever. Nonsense. Who are these people. Do they get out of bed on the 13th day of each month or are they afraid to stay in bed because they might die in their sleep? Some people need to get a life.

Couldnt agree more! If one of these same superstitious loo lahs were offered a nice shiny, low mileage, full service history, excellent condition motor, (worth about 20 grand) for the knock down price of 13 grand, would they walk away?

We are a sad species when we allow a random collection of digits rule our lives!

I think that the best solution would be:

    COUNTY REG NO. MODELYEAR

    So:

    DN5867 04 - Dublin North, 5867th car registered in 2004.
    DS2754 13 - Dublin South, 2754th car registered in 2013.

And so on, and so forth...

    or you know...

    01D1234 - 01 for year - D for Dublin - 1234 for the number of cars registered.

Sweet jesus, this is actually absurd.

While i agree that the superstitious motoviaton behind this new plate is daft, i actually quite like the look of them and it should spread sales away from the january sales obession.

Personally id rather a 131, 141, 151 etc plate as it looks more symmetrical. ... Then in 2020's id prefer the second half: 202, 212, 222 etc :-P
.... Assuming were not all going to be driving around on German plates by then!

Presumably you can't fit a 5th digit to the end, does that mean that the plates will receive a symbol of some sort?

ie; after 9999 comes +001 or *001 or such?

Why not just AAD 0001 to AAD 9999. Then ABD 0001 etc. The last letter is for the county and the first 2 letters are just in chronological order. 26 letters and 26 counties so no problem... unless the referendum goes one way and we have 32 counties on the same system... then we need new letters feck!

How about a post county digit max of 4 with an A indicating the first 9,999 B from 10001 to 19999, like a purchase order or insurance serial system.

    B15-D-4658

    2015, Dublin 14657th registration

I'm all for this if th government bans 13 from everywhere for the year. Government paperwork, calendars, everything. If we're going to be laughing stocks, let's go all out.

As for car dealers having problem due to car sales drying up at the end of the year, maybe they could budget for it or something. I only get paid once a month, but you don't see me whinging about it. Unless this is a new thing, they should have adapted by now.

yeah. do a check on motorcheck.ie or cartell.ie and it won't come up for 11 and 12 cars.

eg seach for 11-d-120001 - its not there.

The extra long import plates only go to 2011, so we'll never see 131 d 120001.
And as the numbers start at 1 again in July of each year then we'll probably never see 6 numbers on a d plate for a long time to come yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,107 ✭✭✭hi5

Also 1 only takes up half a digit, try something like 132 KE 20000
(would Kildare get to twenty thousand regs in 6 months?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,782 ✭✭✭Damien360

This is just idiotic. Should we change the numbers again if some loon decides 14 is just plain bad luck in his culture and therefore it would be discrimination if we did not bow to his religious wishes.

    It is a bloody number.

What a shocking bad idea, a classic example of decision by committee, influenced no doubt by lobbiests, they seem to have applied this logic to the current numbering system:
'if it ain't broke lets break it'
    P.s. Nice plates there eireplates

Perhaps there's a bigger picture here

I think this is also a precursor to

    142 d 1234 stretching into July 2015
to smooth out January rush just like the Brits ,

so in other words you can buy your 15 car in jan 15 with a fourteen plate

or wait til July for a 15 plate.

It might even happen that 132 d will go to July 14

Why else have 131 and 132 and not 131for the whole year ?

What really needs fixing is people's attitude to the first two numbers on the number plate. I thought it was a product of the boom years but people are obsessed with having the most up to date numbers even if it means spending 25k on a soul destroying run of the mill same car as everyone else or getting an older car thats a bit rarer and puts a smile on your face. Oh ya, I forgot, the tax on proper cars is too much to bear too. In summary, most people are stupid

we used to have a beautiful system which mostly included the letter Z. like XZI 742 or 5894 ZD.

So since we have a tradition in this area I suggest the following for 2013:

    Z LM 1111
    Z D 3399
    Z WW 842
    Etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 809 ✭✭✭filbert the fox

Actually if you look at both numbers XZI 742 and 5894 ZD which were owned by our family they add up to 13!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

What i don't get is the people buying new cars with 131 or 132 on them - they are still 2013 reg plates so what's the difference.

Like Mitch Hedberg jokes - the hotels with no 13th floor but for the people on the 14th "you know what floor you're really on" :p

It's the dealers who caused the short buying time of Jan to Feb by offering the same trade in prices for a Jan car as a Dec car. When we get the new plates they will do the same, or worst by offering less for a Jan-Jun car than a Jul-Dec car, so people will only buy in Jul-Aug.

What was wrong with the pre 87 system anyways? We need a system like the UK one that's for sure..
And like it or not cars with D reg are worth more...fact :)
So why do we Dubs deserve more for our cars?? If we had a system like the UK's we wouldn't have that problem...plus if mr Varadker had a bit of sense it's a big revenue and would create a good few new jobs! There's people like me that would pay a premium for private plates like UK...I'd love MAXY 1!! I'd pay €1.000 no probs ;)

Unlikely, KE/WW/MH didn't get to 40k in 2000 so unless we got back to 2000 levels and had a major uptick on top of that its unlikely any of the two digit counties will get that many sales.

That is, however, assuming that sales level off on to two peaks rather than still selling nearly entirely at the start of the calendar year.

The UK has area of registration and the period of the year it was bought, the last 3 letters are random. So you want us to use the UK system which only differs from ours in that they use random letters instead of sequential numbers
