    Hi,
I called some car insurance companies.
They don't want to take in consideration my no claims bonus for 11 years because I still have my old car in Spain i use twice years when im back for a few days.
Some of them refuse totally to insure me, and some of them ask me to cancel my car insurance in Spain to get a"normal "quote (like 500 euros instead of 2500 euros).
I told them the system for the bonus is totally different and its not possible anyway to transfer my bonus from Spain to Ireland but still, they keep talking about regulation, new changes 2 years ago...
I never drove in Ireland depiste i'm living here 6 years now

the question is do I really have to cancel my car insurance in Spain to get a "normal" quote

    Thank you for your answers

You cant use your NCB on 2 separate policies.
Your using your NCB in spain to get a cheap policy over there.

So you need to decide which car needs the NCB more or indeed start from scratch on the IRL policy and build up a NCB over here.
Thats the way most of them work im afraid.

    Thank you for the answer.
As we can have the no claim bonus on different cars in Spain, would that be illegal to cancel my car insurance in Spain, then get my car insurance in Ireland with the NCB and then reinsure again after that my old car in Spain?
    Thanks

Once the spainish company issue you with the NCB, you then give that to the Irish company.

When you go to insure the spain car again, you will physically have no NCB cert to give back to the spainish insurance company.

The spanish company have all my records in Spain, we don't have the same system for the NCB and they wouldnt ask if im insured somewhere else.

So you are asking someomne on an Irish forum is it ok for you to lie to both your Irish insurance and spanish insurance company. The general rule of all insurance contracts world wide is "Upmost good faith" or "Uberrima fides", a breach of that principle can have very serious consequences.

You want to get your NCB from spain, give it to Irish company, to show them you are no longer insured in spain. Then you want to go back to insurance company in spain as they have all your details they will give you 11 years no claims protection. Will you tell both companies exactly what you have done. Will you inform the Irish company what exactly you are doing. Same for the spanish company.

Stupid question but why shouldn't this poster get a discount on both policies as a safe 11 year no claims driver?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 qwerty1805

    of course,I will.
thats exactly what's the irish broker asked me to do.I need proof you canceled your car insurance. Not his business if i will be reinsure with the same spanish company after he said and I called the spanish insurance and they don't care if i have 10 cars insured somewhere else.
sounds weird I agree , that why I asked for confirmation

OP, you will also want to avoid 123.ie and nononsense.ie as they are asking illegal questions about how long you have been a resident in Ireland. Liberty Mutual have said they will stop, but still have the question on their website.

insurance companies in Ireland don't want you to have a NCB on more than 1 car I have been told on the phone when I called them, doesnt matter if the car is in Ireland or somewhere else

I was speaking to AA less than an hour ago for my brother and his wife. They asked "have your brother, or his spouse lived outside of Ireland in the past 12 months". Slightly different to the usual residency question, but still irrelevant imo.

Correct, it is irrelevant. Would you consider making a complaint to the Data Protection Commissioner here

I believe Irish Insurance companies are unfairly penalising those who live and work in other countries. Spending six months working in Spain for instance should not make you a greater insurance risk. Many of those that are underwritten by international companies are not asking questions about residency in other countries.

    fbd, axa

FBD have already been reported. I'll take a look at AXA.

Strange. Axa do not ask any questions or list any conditions about residency on their website quote form.

When did they ask you the question. When you told them you had an EU licence?
    What specifically did they say?

Try setanta insurance. They offer using your no claims bonus on a second car.
They operate through brokers. Their website should point you to a local broker.

    thanks for the information.

AXA asked me if I had a full Irish licence.I answered them i had a full EU licence.
how long time have you been living here,...
then they asked if i had been insured in Ireland before, Like I said it wasnt the case, they wouldnt take in consideration my NCB.
i will have a look to Setanta insurance

I didn't call the main phone number but i called directly an AXA agency found on the golden pages.
i will call the phone number displayed on AXA website in the week and let you know if I have the same answer.

back to the original point, we dont know whether the spainish companies have an issue with having a car insured in ireland and getting insurance afterwards in spain while only having the one record of insurance to that point. If the OP was to cancel in spain, get his irish insurance using the built up no claims and then go to spain and get insurance stating that he has built up 11 years no claims in spain and now has a car insured in ireland also, I dont think he would be doing anything wrong. I dont think it would matter to them tbh. As long as you declare everything, you are in the clear. I think its Irish insurers that are really operating this nonsense of a policy where you basically cant have a second car.

Just look for a broker whos underwriter offers NCB mirroring eg setanta, kennco and you can keep the bonus on your car in spain and use it here too.
