What type of nut do i need??

I have a set of wide spray jets for my car, but the fixing nuts are missing and I can't install them now

I have tried a standard nut, but the shaft on the jet seems to get slightly wider toward the base, so the standard nut will only thread the shaft a few millimeters before locking. The lady at the local hardware said I needed a special nut, but she couldn't tell me the name. I googled it and found zilch. There are washer jets on ebay with fixing nuts, but they may be different sizes, so I don't want to waste money.

1) What is this type of nut called?
2) Where online, or locally can I get a pair?

Measure the threaded shaft diameter, that tells you the size of the nut. if its 6mm, 7 or 8mm dia, get an M6, M7 or M8 nylon nut. That will do less harm to the shaft than a steel nut.

It may be that the thread is finer, so you could need an M6, M7 or M8 fine thread.

If you want to do some thread checking online, look up "metric threads" and then "metric fine threads".

If you could put up a picture it would help, but I'd second the washer idea for the moment.

Get a nut thats slightly too big and wrap the jet with ptfe tape......or you could use a small cable tie if youre not fussy....If you have neither of the mentioned, i'm sure new jets are not that dear in Halfords

Yeah a pic would help, it might not even take a nut I was thinking, one of those spring clip things maybe?
Fit over the shaft, turn it 90degrees to grab and lock?? Dunno....

I'm afraid a lot of washers would be needed. There is about a 10mm gap after the nut stops spinning. But i will consider this as a temporary fix.

I could buy a new set, but these washers are good quality, steel, wide spray jets and I have had them sprayed the colour of my car, so I want to use them.

Thanks for advice people. Some good ideas there too.
