didn't mention a degree? there is no point doing a course if there is nothing to show for it is there?, it was a reasonable question imo, no need for your footloose response mr logins :p

Coursera also offer a wide range of free courses, provided by well know universities e.g. Stanford, John Hopkins, Caltech.
I'm doing a course with them at the moment, and the workload and syllabus is exactly the same as the equivalent course in the university (University of Michigan), and the same professor runs it.
Obviously though, the certificate at the end is not worth much, its more for your own satisfaction.

Found one that would interest me. There doesn't seem to be an option to save to your computer although the blurb says you can.

Few of the collages are involved in https://www.edx.org and you actually do get graded by the collage itself. Won't get you the degree but it does look like they will recognise the pass in the module itself.
My guess is that as the courses expand, it may get to the point where they'll let you sit expands and recognise them for the course.

From the course I'm doing on coursera
Frequently Asked Questions – Will I get a certificate after completing this class?

Yes. Students who successfully complete the class will receive a certificate signed by the instructor.

Whether anyone recognises the certificates is another thing entirely.

www.udacity.com offer some great technical courses, however they aren't basic beginners level. They aren't certified right now but they are hoping to branch out into proper recognised certification. Atm their computer science 101 course can be done for free and you can pay to do a recognised certified exam at the end . The courses are challenging and genuinely high calibre.
