Sergio Martinez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr-Middleight Championship of the World

The days are counting down to one of the most eagerly anticipated bouts in boxing. On September 15th Middleweight Champion of the World Sergio Martinez defends his title against the man seen by most to be the #1 contender in the division, Julio Cesar Chavez jnr.

There's some real needle in this one. Martinez has labelled Chavez jnr a puppet, jnr deflected criticisms of him not fighting Martinez after winning the WBC title by declaring that his management team dictated what fights were made. Jnr referred to Martinez as a ballerina, due to his elusive fighting style and not being willing to simply stand and trade with a fighter. Much of this can be heard in the recent HBO face off between the fighters
    .

No doubt some of this could be for the cameras to build up what is a massive fight, but I genuinely believe Martinez is annoyed this didn't happen sooner, and it's obvious Chavez jnr can't wait to prove himself as a top, top fighter and remove himself from his father's shadow.
The fight itself is bound to be exciting, Chavez looking to apply pressure and wear Martinez down with his size and power, Martinez looking to move, use his fantastic footspeed to draw shots from Chavez get in and out with hard stinging combos.

Martinez is 37 years of age now, and has looked less than sensational in his last two bouts. Meanwhile Chavez under the tutelage of Freddie Roach has just been getting better and better. But he's never been in at this level, he's clearly quite tight at the weight, and will be feeling pressure like never before when he gets into the ring with Martinez.

I think the bookies have got it right, with Martinez around 4/7 and Chavez 6/4. I'll be edging with old man Sergio to still have enough, but wouldn't be surprised if Chavez jnr pulled off the upset, and I'm expecting this fight to be closely contested to the latter stages at least.

Looking forward to this fight, Chavez jr was great last time out.

Against Andy? I thought he looked incredibly average and that was with ring shenanigans, a crowd in the tank, presumed doping and Andy fighting with incredibly bizarre tactics. Strong, but that's about all he showed in that fight.

On form and class and in Las Vegas you have to assume Martinez will win, but, again, his age will catch up with him one of these days. I just hope it's not against Chavez Jr.

I cannot see past Martinez in this one has had more quality bouts than Chavez

Absolute belter of a fight. Raging Rigo was taken off the card though. I know it wasnt much of a contest but himself and Macklin on the undercard would have been awesome.

I have to query this too. Not saying he was poor, but the opposition and resistance was pretty lame. Andy had nothing to offer. Harsh but true.

Martinez is all wrong for Chavez. Fast, slick, elusive, and above all, tough! I can see a schooling here is Sergio is close to being on good form.

I'm gunna have some of that 25/1 for a draw, this has rematch written all over it even if its not deserved.

Chavez won't lose unless he is KO'd

Unfortunately, I have that gut feeling also. I hope Martinez makes it very clear, otherwise...

In other Middleweight news, two title holders (and Ring magazine's #1 and #2 ranked contenders) Felix Sturm and Daniel Geale are about to face off in 5 mins time.

If Sturm wins who knows what will happen, but a Geale victory could pave the way for a fight with the winner of Chavez jnr and Martinez.

Do ye lads think Sergio would be a much bigger star if he was with Top Rank or Golden Boy?

Not really, he'd probably get more favourable treatment from judges and HBO commentators than he does currently, possibly earn more money, but I don't really think he'd be a bigger star.

If he beats Chavez jnr things will change for him. It's much easier to be a star in the US if you're from the Phillipines, Mexico or Puerto Rico, where large minorities will staunchly support you, but at the box office and on ppv. If you're Argentinian, well then it's the same as being from any 200+ other countries in the world, and you're going to have to do things the hard way to become a big star.

Thats a good point, Matthysse for example has been on the wrong side of a couple of robberies and with his fighting style would be a massive star if he came from the right country.

Easy to say after the fact but before it everyone thought it would be a tough fight, He made Andy look like he was not a fighter at all. He impressed me as i wasn't sure if he was the real deal, Now i think he deserves the fight with Martinez.

I don't believe me or you thought Andy could really threaten. And, yes, it can look easy after the fight, but Andy has shown before that he is quite weak when the pressure is on. He was blowing after three rds vs. Chavez. Martinez should beat him. Chavez is fairly useful. Not sold on him being close to a great boxer. He will make it tough for Martinez, but he will lose.

    Link to the 24/7 episode

I really wanna see Martinez win he deserves way more credit and recognition than he's gotten to date. Prob is cos as Big Ears said he's from Argentina

Martinez seems really psyched up for this. Hes so intense in the face off between the 2. If hes at his best this is a one sided beat down. Just a little niggle saying he hasn't been good the last couple of fights and Chavez seems to be improving. Still going for Martinez to get him out of there in style.

Chavez Jr comes across as a bit of a disrespectful punk, if video is to be believed not training as hard as he should either.

Firmly with Martinez with this for this fight.

He may well be those things but I wouldn't consider 24/7 a reliable source. They were really pushing the 'Chavez doesn't take this seriously' in this episode, almost as much as they were pushing the 'Manny isn't taking this seriously' line in the lead up to the Margarito fight.

Lou DiBella going off on one about the Shenanigans of Jose Sulaiman, the WBC and Chavez jnr's crew. It really is amazing that some of this carry on is allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭DiscoHugh

There's something very sketchy about Julio jnr's rise. From the talk of missing drug tests, to the blatant handing over of the WBC trinket to him, to the above video.I think HBO are complicit in all this in that they're in desperate need of a next big thing, given their current stable of stars are fading.

I hear he weighs over 170lbs as of yesterday, rumours of diuretics abound etc.

I can't see Sexy Sergio losing this one on merit but I'm beginning to worry if it's not emphatic, he could lose it on the cards.

    Prediction. Emphatic victory for Martinez:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭colly10

Martinez needs to win this well to get the result here or get a KO. Sulaiman said a while back that Chavez is the better fighter and will get the win, now he's placed a bet on him.

Add to that that despite Chavez having tested positive before, he missed 2 drug tests and has received no punishment.

Really hope Martinez still has enough left in him and wins this one well.

Primetime looks like being freeview for this which is good news.

I hope Martinez wins but fear Chavez will have the toughness not to be ko'd and win by points robbery.

edit: Only freeview for the undercard.

Chavez for me, just think he's so strong at the weight. Martinez looked ordinary against macklin+barker and he's not getting any younger. If the decision is in any way close, id reckon chevez will still get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,374 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I believe Martinez's lackluster performance against Barker and Macklin was due to complacency. I think that won't be the case against Chavez, given there seems to be genuine hostility between the two.

Anybody know the odds on macklins fight? had a quick look on paddy power and they don't even have it listed

I am having a small punt on a draw.

I don't think Martinez can KO JCC jr.

He may box his head off, but it will be interesting to see how he deals with the incessant pressure. Saying that, Chavez has lost many rounds against alot poorer fighters, I am just wary of how it will go down if the score cards are called upon.

Even if Martinez outscores him clearly I can smell a draw with a rematch which will be hyped to the last.

Martinez needs to leave people in absolutely no doubt here, Chavez is the money fighter, the younger guy who has alot of financial backing behind him. A win for him will be a promoters dream.

i've backed the draw from 3 weeks ago at 25/1. this has rematch written all over it, I don't see a KO for either man.

Is it just me or did any camera get a shot of Chavez on the scales making the weight? All the clips I've seen show him getting on the scales. The official then gets in front of the scales blocking the camera's view and next thing Chavez is off the scales with the announcement of 158.

It'll be interesting to hear what the weights on the night are

Main Part of the card about to start now.

    Martinez vs Chavez Jnr
    Martinez vs Beltran Jnr
    Macklin vs Alcine
    Rigondeaux vs Marroquin

Should be a cracker, Macklin expected around 3am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Jayob10

JCC jnr looked shocking at the weigh in, woeful shady goings on, they could not wait to get him away from the scales and back into his tracksuit either.

Something doesn't add up, he looks like he has been killing himself to make the weight, but Junior has never been one to kill himself in training so it doesn't add up.
