Is is possible for an Irish Citizen to hold two separate passports?

While my friend has a perfectly clean & current passport, it would be advantageous for various reasons to hold a second passport, which would make it easier for him to do business in more countries...

Do you mean a second Irish passport or a second passport of a different country.

There is no problem in Ireland having 2 passports from different countries.

If you require 2 passports both from Ireland because say you for business visit Isreal and say any number of Arab states, I think but may be wrong that you can apply to DoFA for two passports in that situation.

It is possible, you can apply to the passport office for a second passport. The issuing of such, however, is subject to the discression of the HEO in the passport office. It will also be issued for a maximum of three years at a time.

Thanks for the response. My 'friend' needs to travel to a particular country on business, but his residency visa for another country may be in his current passport, which would cause a problem.

Its nothing to do with Isreal, just local politics and job protection...

I know this is a really old thread but I am kind of dealing with the same issue ... I have a US passport but would like to have second one - from some small Euro nation, like Monaco or Cyprus. Anyone has some tips on where and how to start this journey to my new passport?

Why not drag up an old thread on boards.cy to ask about getting a Cyprus passport

If you have €5M to spare then getting a cypriot passport is straightforward.

This topic was about holding two concurrent Irish passports (which is entirely possible - I have had two due to the risk of needing Israeli and Kuwaiti entry within a single passport term; and indeed the passport office website now documents the procedure whereas before it was ridiculously nudge-nudge-wink-wink despite being entirely legal.

You need to a: learn how to read and b: get citizenship somewhere else that doesn't require repudiating your US one.

Yes you can have two separate passports, I've had two in the past plus you can also have the new passport card which is effectively a second passport for the EU...
