I don't think the PS3 can read external hard drives. However, I had this problem with a USB drive and I found that if you create folders like "Video", "Music" & "Photo" on the root then it will recognise those folders.

Out of curiosity what size is the HD? I know the PS3 won't read HD's that are over a certain capacity.
Also if you create folders on the root (like images, videos etc.) then it will pick them up.
I have a 1TB HD and the PS3 wont register it as it can't read HD's over a certain Capacity(Unsure what the cut-off point is, have to ask housemate).

I wonder if it's an NTFS vs. FAT32 issue?

Can you confirm if the HDD is USB-powered or if it requires an external power source?

Can you also confirm if the HDD indicator light flashes on the external when its plugged into the PS3?

Finally, can you double-check that the HDD is formatted to FAT32?

That' strange. I have an Iomega 1TB external power source Harddrive that my PS3 can read no problem. Also have a 1TB Media centre harddrive my PS3 can read. Never had a problem with either. So size wasn't the issue. That first program probably didn't format it properly.

As per Klair88, i have a 1TB iomega external HDD and it reads fine. I just had to format it to FAT32 and put everything in it's proper folders as recommended above.
