What's my best option? anything that doesn't look like a transit would be a bonus as would 4wd(live at the top of a hill in Donegal) Will consider any make as(unfortunately) am more interested in practicality than aesthetics.

Kia Carens jumps to mind. Diesel, reliable and loads of goodies. should get a 2006/7 for that money.

They are quite rare here but the Mitsubish Delica can be got for good money. There aren't that many going.
They come in 7 or 8 seater configuration. The 8 seaters are fantastic with the seating arrangements. the rear row fold up sideways to make a spacious 5 seater with massive boot. Even with the 8 seats its got a good boot.
The front row can be turned to face backwards too pushed backwards against the front seats. really versatile. It's basically a Pajero Chassis with a Van type body. It's a bit van like but really comfortable and spacious.
They are usually all 2.8 diesel Auto's (some 2.5 diesel Autos but not as good) and will be Jap imports.
They get about 24mpg, tax will be slightly higher than some other models but it really is a go anywhere, do anything vehicle.

I almost got one over here in Aus where they are a lot more common and very popular.

The Delica is a good suggestion but the only thing is that it is based on the L300 panel van, might not be that good to drive.

the previa can come in awd, might be an option. not sure if these are 4wd but someone told me they are very spacious, plenty of change too http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3667358

previa, its old but very cheap http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3663823

I'd have a previa over a delica every time.
